I wanna start by saying I was wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed Evangelion and what it had to offer in terms of pure entertainment value. In terms of enjoyability it’s a 9/10 no question.

The influence it has, the impact it’s made on anime is unquestionable and indescribable.
Rewatching it I paid less attention to the fights and more on the characters, the inner workings of the series, the themes presented, the philosophical questions raised and the motives of said characters.

I think this show is worthy of multiple viewings for how layered it is
the intelligence of Evangelion I think is overstated quite a lot, and if you even try to critique this you’re accused of being retarded. But nonetheless, despite being enjoyable to watch the message and themes and philosophical concepts explored aren’t very complex.
This is not to say that the concepts shown are pure shit, they’re not. But you can find other examples of what’s being presented here in books and that’ll give you more of an answer than this show. But I think in terms of how these relate to the show I think is good for an anime.
I also think Evangelion tries to attempt to question more than necessary at the cost of making any semblance of cohesion within its narrative, that’s not a bad thing that’s my observation. This is apparent near the end where the creator basically directs a arthouse film
I asked myself multiple times during this series, what is the purpose here? Why is this being introduced? What message do they want to convey? This being the philosophical concepts, the depression and mental anguish of the characters, etc

As you go on, the less answers you get
That’s not necessarily a bad thing because at least it’s being shown but to an ordinary audience member who wants a sense of closure this show doesn’t present that. Just a bunch of concepts being thrown that have significance but don’t give the show any answers .
One BIG question I have for the series is, why even attempt the human instrumentality project? This is never explained, not even in the movie. Shinjis mother died cuz of it and that’s why Gendo wants to be turnt into tang but the origin of this is never addressed, it just happens
Idk how people say the characters are shit, I think they were all justified in their actions besides Misato in the movie. If you think shinji was a crybaby I think its cuz you watch too many anime where the characters never care about the consequences of their actions.
Asuka > Rei Altho I love both, Asuka just reminds me of myself and I relate to her more than Rei. Sometimes felt as though that Rei wasn’t complex just quiet.

Near the start Rei says “man is scared of the darkness and scratches at its edges with fire” I think she’s the darkness
What I mean by rei is the darkness is the fact that she’s considered a hollow husk only meant to start the 3rd impact without any humanity or will of her own. Shinji is “man” scratching away at this bringing “light” into her life making her realize her individuality or humanity.
both of them and all the main characters represent the worst and most vulnerable aspects of what its like to be human, to be scared and unknowing what purpose or significance they hold or what consequences they face. Theyre incredibly relatable and have flaws, like the rest of us
Overall Evangelion was very good, despite the filler being mid but I’d still say people should watch it for the characters. Some episodes were clip shows, the weave a story episodes specifically.

If I was to summarize it I would say it’s a mixture of arthouse + action. 9/10
Oh yea btw shinji crying and then jerking off to Asukas unconscious half naked body encapsulates everything you need to know about their relationship
This is an example of what I was talking about before, although this article explains the concept of being your true self much more eloquently and explicitly than Evangelion, Evangelion does a decent job of integrating the concept into their show.
