THREAD: I’m going to throw my 10p in and try and explain why I believe there has been an increase in violence towards the police in the UK. The answer is not a simple one and is multi-faceted.

#dispatches #PoliceUnderAttack
MRS MAY;
Since Theresa May became HomeSec in 2010 she commenced a sustained verbal and financial onslaught of Policing in the UK (financial - E&W only). The verbal aspect resonates with Allports scale of prejudice.
Her verbal attack on Police is well documented;

1. Announces 20% cuts and ordered to do more with less.
2. Accuses us of showing contempt for public and “corrupt” (2014)
3. Accused of racism re; stop and search (statistics prove this a politically charged LIE)

3/24
4. Accused of crying wolf over 20% cuts.
5. Accuses police over institutional racism re; their perceived lack of diversity.

These examples are to name only a few. Her contempt for Policing has never been hidden.

4/24
The belittling of Police in the UK filters down, and if our supposed leader shows no respect for Police, it is little surprise that certain members of society don’t either. This lack of respect inevitably escalates to violence (allport).

5/24
CUTS;
TM ordered the Police to do more with less (20% less). Nobody within Policing disagreed that we needed to be more efficient. However nobody agreed that efficiency would negate the need for police officers.

6/24
Police officers are the experts who predicted a rise in crime if you cut officer numbers. Is anyone shocked they were correct and TM was wrong? What we were guilty of overlooking (I believe), was the rise in violence against us.

7/24
CONSEQUENCE/SENTENCING;
Time and time again we see the sentences (or lack of) widely reported in the media which are handed down to the feral scum who attack officers across the country.

8/24
There is little consequence for bad behaviour anymore. Some argue this begins at school. The feral youths of today know the school can’t do anything, the Police can’t do anything and they are supported by the career do-gooders who live in a fairytale and make excuses 4 them

9/24
If there are no proportionate consequences for bad behaviour (children or adults) then bad behaviour will continue unabated! Is a community payback order for assaulting a police officer a proportionate consequence?

10/24
Does a CPO/suspended sentence dissuade that person from assaulting a police officer again? Does it send a message to anyone else to dissuade them from assaulting a police officer?

No, it sends the message that this behaviour is somewhat acceptable!

11/24
I’m not suggesting every assault requires a custodial sentence (such as a push). But ACTION must be met with CONSEQUENCE.

The courts are undermining this. But we must recognise the judiciary and prison service are also underfunded. Can they always impose a custodial?

12/24
SOCIETY;
Social services, youth services, NHS, amongst others are also grossly underfunded. This is fuelling the breakdown of society which the almost broken Police service are desperately trying to keep sewn together.

13/24
Society is becoming more divided (politically, economically, ethnically, religiously), more frustrated, and increasingly violent as a result.

Children are murdering each other for drugs, money and difference in postcode.

14/24
The police are the ones who regularly face those who are worse affected by the above, so it’s of little wonder they are subjected to increasing abuse and violence. But that DOES NOT make it acceptable!

15/24
But Police are not the only ones under attack. Our paramedics, nurses, doctors and even our water fairies (Fire) are all facing increasing violence, which is attributed to tweet no.15.

It is NOT acceptable in any society!

16/24
MEDIA;
The media have been wholly complicit in the undermining of our Police service. In vilifying them. Publishing non-stories about officers buying food on duty, eating on duty, using shields for sledges in snow - effectively de-humanising them!

17/24
More harmful though: Publishing attention grabbing headlines to stories of 10 second videos of arrests suggesting Police have been violent. Entirely intentional to gain more online clicks for profit, without knowing the full UNEDITED facts of a story.

18/24
CONCLUSION
The government MUST publicly back the police and they must do it now. Policing is at breaking point. It has almost lost control if not already. They must back Policing in their words and principle, and fund them to do their job properly to make UK safe again.

19/24
The media MUST stop demonising Police for being human. They MUST stop trial by social media without facts, using clicks for profits which comes at the expense of society and fuels unfounded distrust and anger towards the Police.

20/24
Police forces MUST better train and support their officers. We must not become victims. We must be able to fight back when we are physically attacked and the current standard of OST falls far short of preparing us for this.

21/24
I have seen many arguments for routine arming. I am not in favour of this, but I do support taser given to every operational police officer - it is available to forces now, they must back this without political interference.

It should be no different to any other PPE kit.

22/24
The public MUST decide what sort of society they want to live in. If they want law and order, they must hold our politicians to account now. Law and order is at breaking point and it’s demise will have tragic and irreversible consequences.

23/24
Finally - the public MUST condemn attacks on police and help officers if they see them being attacked! Not stand back film them on phones!

An attack on a police officer in the UK is an attack on the fabrics which are desperately holding our strained society together.
