Don Jr.’s racist retweet about Kamala Harris has been weighing heavily on my mind. even though this won’t reach many people I still want to put this out on Twitter:
so if you aren’t aware of what happened this past weekend, Don. Jr. (the President’s son) retweeted a tweet which said that since Senator Harris is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India she isn’t an “American Black” to which he commented “Is this true? Wow.”
so let’s walk through some of the reasons this is racist and bigoted.
1.) it’s basically a “birther” conspiracy against Senator Harris. this sentiment that she’s not an “American Black” looks to undermine her racial identity and imply that she is not fit to run for President because both of her parents are immigrants.
2.) it attempts to paint Senator Harris as “the unknown other” and this form of otherism is being uniquely applied to a woman of color— keep in mind the President’s own mother was an immigrant & Trump was never painted as some “unknown other” because— let’s be candid— he’s white.
3.) this also attempts to say that Sen. Harris can’t speak to the experiences of black people in America. last time I checked, racists & institutional racism doesn’t care or check where your ancestors came from, it discriminates & oppresses all black Americans (& people of color)
Don Jr. claimed that his “Is this true? Wow.” comment is about the fact that Senator Harris’ mother is an Indian American immigrant. because apparently, “ it’s not something he [Don Jr.] had ever heard before” but let’s be intellectually honest— that’s not true.
anyone who has heard Senator Harris tell her story knows that her parents are an integral part of her life & huge influences on her. both of her parents were involved in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
Harris talks about her mother all the time— at campaign stops, in interviews, on social media. her mother is one of the most influential people in her life. it’s no secret & something that Don Jr.— who is heavily involved in twitter politics— would have heard at some point.
I think Don Jr. deleted the retweet because he realized just how overtly racist it is to question a sitting Senator‘s identity like that. it’s ugly, it’s terrible, and it’s just more evidence of how deeply racist the president, his administration, and family are.
