1/ A short thread about Bobby Fischer (1943-2008), America's greatest chess-champion, treated like an outcast after he rejected the Judaism of his family and opposed his government's actions.

2/ A child prodigy, in 1963 Fischer won every game in the U. S. chess championship against 11 of the highest ranked players in the country to become U.S. Champion at just 14 years of age.

3/ In 1972, at the height of the Cold War, he beat the Soviet grandmaster Boris Spassky https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland to win The World Chess Championship. They became lifelong friends after and Fischer decided at just 30 he'd retire early, and at the top.

4/ Fischer wouldn't play professionally again for another 20 years. He used his new-found prize-money to start a new life and devote himself to self-study and learning as much as he could about history, politics, religion... expanding his mind and understanding of the world.

7/ Hard-up after being stiffed-out of his money by his church, and living of royalties from his books he agreed to a rematch with Spassky in 1992, to be played in Yugoslavia, which was then disintegrating into civil war.

8/ Told not to go, he had defied the U.S. Presidential Executive Order 12810 https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Executive_Order_12810 which should not have applied to him anyway and in response the U.S. Government withdrew his citizenship and made him state-less. He won the rematch comfortably.

9/ In response to a letter from the U.S. Treasury Department that told him not to go to Yugoslavia, he spat on it to applause saying "That is my answer." He said during another press conference "Soviet Communism is basically a mask for Bolshevism, which is a mask for Judaism."

10/ Asked if he was an 'anti-Semite' he responded that Arabs were Semites and "I am definitely not anti-Arab." Anyhow with his $3.5 million prize-money in Switzerland, he was able to live comfortably in exile in Hungary and travel, before moving to live in Japan.

11/ Following the events of 9/11 and in an unstable condition, he claimed that an interviewer tricked him as he gave out a tirade against the country of his birth. This led to his arrest in 2004 and imprisonment whilst trying to board a flight to Manila.

12/ In jail, writing to various countries in search of asylum, and after 8 months in jail, following a special measure by the Parliament of Iceland, he was granted citizenship and allowed to travel there where he spent the final few years of his life, passing away in early 2008.
