these are all the black girls to hold a main character title on nickelodeon after 2014.. now tell me what isn’t intentional.
this is skai jackson and trinitee stokes the only two brown/black girls to have a main character role on disney channel sit on since china anne mcclain in 2011.
sorry *brown/ dark skin
these are the women of the box office phenomenon black panther. the only movie of 2018 to feature brown/ dark skinned women ONLY.
these are the other (not all of them) black women who were also in movies in 2018. for tessa thompson.. it would be her second of the year.
it would also be a second for amandla.
amandla has held 4 roles of books involving black girls to be adapted into movies. (the hunger games, the darkest minds, the hate u give, and everything, everything)
the only black girl centered teen romcom movie that netflix has released (that i know of) is reality high and surprise surprise. this is is the lead girl.
ill continue later.
these are most of the black girls that play teenagers in netflix original shows. note the skin, the hair, and/or the eye color.
this girl will be taking on the teenage black girl role in the new black netflix sitcom family reunion.
all about the washington’s was a black family sitcom on netflix. here’s the cast.
this is deidra and laney rob a train. good movie but i don’t understand why they couldn’t cast a dark skinned girl as her sister.
since 2000, nickelodeon has produced about 40+ live action movies. here are all the movies that have a dark skinned girl as lead. kyla pratt (maniac magee, 2003) keke palmer (rags, 2012) riele downs (tiny christmas, 2017)
disney channel did worse because out of their 100+ live action dcoms. only FIVE have had a dark skinned girl as a lead character.
WAIT ITS SIX! I FORGOT HOW TO BUILD A BETTER BOY!
i also wanna note that dcoms often feature disney’s own talent. skai jackson was on disney for 7 years and never got a dcom.
this is riri williams. she could very well be a turning point for darker representation for young/teen girls in the media if they ever add her to the MCU.
with some research i found most of who were fancasted in official articles more than twice. here they are.
i can finally add on to my thread. the comic Raising Dion was originally about a ds black mother raising her ds son. but that has changed.
this is the cast of mixed-ish. a show where they highlight the difficulties of being biracial and also the difficulties of adjusting to modern life after living in a cult.
Kenya Barris has a 4 sitcoms that are heavily imbedded with black culture. he only has (i think) 3 dark skin actors out of the all the casts.
this who will be playing the african deity oshun in american gods. however the next pictures are how oshun has been depicted multiple times in literature.
these are two books people assumed were about brown/dark skin monoracial black girls. however when adapted into movies they were played by amandla stenberg and yara shahidi, respectfully.
digging in to the sun is also a star a little bit. this is the family of natasha, a 17-year old jamaican immigrant. now while this genetically can happen. it’s clear that the look they wanted for the family isn’t the look they wanted for the leading woman.
this is the pierce family from black lightning. one of the FEW black shows that has a monoracial black family. both the daughters are also superheroes (we needed that). the oldest daughter is also in school to be a doctor like her mom. it’s pretty much excellent portrayal.
meet aria brooks. the first dark skin black girl to be cast on a nickelodeon show since 2014. she’s the newest cast member of the new all that.
here are the cast of two shows: i’m not okay with this (netflix) and utopia falls (hulu) notice anything missing?
i would like to point out that most shows that so feature a dark skin black girl, she is either a side character, doesn’t have her own storyline, or is only there to support another characters storyline.
although the creators preached diversity amongst the gossip girl cast. ultimately they decided to go a different route, but still stuck to their promise of some diversity.
here we are! adding to the colorism thread! there’s a new show coming out on @netflix call a babysitter’s guide to monster hunting. two girls have been cast! here’s what they look like next to their characters!
this is alexandra shipp. an actress that took the role of storm most recently. when she found that kiki layne and her team were actively trying to get kiki the role of storm, alexandra expressed her anger saying “i don’t have to be the color of a crayon”
this is the cast of all american.. while this show is a great show. only white/ mixed people exist in the prominent wealthy side of town and all people darker than a paper bag are stereotypes and live in the “hood”.
if you think it only happens in live action, then you’re wrong. here is the progression of aisha (winx) and orange blossom (strawberry shortcake).
now for some positive! here are the stars of my recent obsession blood and water! an amazing show from netflix south africa about a girl look for a long sister. im serious when i say this show is good.
here we have lovie simone as the title character in selah and the spades! a dark coming of age movie about a school and its faction divided student. at the top of the hierarchy is a impulsive, vulnerable girl named selah! it’s a mafia meets high school movie on amazon prime.
more about selah and the spades: i feel powerful every time i watch it because there has never been a movie where a dark skin black girl ruled her student body. will love that movie forever.
