I still haven’t even read Gintama 703 and I’m admittedly completely burned out on the series due to many factors, but I can’t deny that the 10 or so years I translated it were a big part of my life and the people I met along the way are some of the most precious.
I probably won’t read the ending for a long while, so I won’t be able to react to it like all of you, but do know this: I wouldn’t take back any of it. The friendships I’ve made thanks to Gintama have changed my life even if the series didn’t have the same impact so I’d do it all
Again If it’d mean I’d be able to meet so many wonderful people. I hope the ending is all that you hoped for and that we can still call each other friends long after it’s done.
And Sorachi, I feel like I know you too well after tangling with your writing for ten years. There were many lows, but when you reached those occasional glorious highs, I was glad to be there. Take a good long rest Gorilla, you’ve deserved it for making something so beloved.
I may not translate your next work but I’ll certainly read it. Despite my feelings towards what Gintama became in the end, you’re still an unquestionably unique voice in Shounen. Not to the point of redefining the demographic but definitely a voice worth listening to.
Anyway, I’ve said what I had to. I slaved over hot balls for 10 years and while I couldn’t make it all the way to the end, it really was the friends I made along the way that made it worth it. Thanks Gintama, Hideaki Sorachi, and all of you for reading my translations.
