thread of jellyfish species/pictures/facts for you all and @AURORAmusic to enjoy 🧿
① Pelagia noctiluca ~ produces light flashes when stimulated by waves or passing ships that create turbulence
② Euplokamis dunlapae ~ tentacles covered in cells that create a sticky substance used to hunt zooplankton (can also swim backwards!)
③ Cyanea capillata (part 1) ~ “Lion’s mane” largest known species and one of the coolest looking in my opinion 🦁
④ Cyanea capillata (part 2) ~ are one of the worlds longest animal and can reach longer than a blue whale!
⑤ Aurelia limbata ~ found in the waters of Japan and I love of the Genus name is close to aurora @AURORAmusic hahaha 🧿
⑥ Bolinopsis infundibulum ~ can produce rainbow light that appear to be flashing - the first picture looks like it having the shape of a Tie Fighter! haha
⑦ Aequoreidae zygocanna ~ it’s shaped like a flat plate/disc and the gelatin is hard like cartilage - a not so squishy jellyfish then hehe
• — Turritopsis dohrnii — •
defying death, these jellyfish have unlocked the key to immortality. they can return to their “child” polyp stage to escape death, from the adult medusa body form. they can go back to seeing through the eyes of a child, over and over again 😌
