Taras Press takes its name from طرس\\طرش (among other references)- the medieval Arabic practice of engraving moulds to print amulets as early as the 9th c. - examples of prints and references to the process are described by Bulliet (1987): http://ghazali.org/articles/jaos107-3-1987-rwb.pdf #beforeGutenberg
Although this early printing depended on contact with China esp paper-making, evidence points to independent development through well-established fields of engraving & seal-carving. The @britishlibrary exhibit on #makingyourmark highlights Chinese type as the 1st #beforeGutenberg
But East Asian printing with movable type #beforeGutenberg depended on slow and expensive casting processes with precisely carved matrices. By contrast طرس/ṭarš (pic from @incunabula) process of engraving Arabic matrices was relatively efficient & modular bc of formulaic usage.
