After some interesting discussions on success rate, I have dived a bit deeper into the data. You will see the massive gap in @EPSRC fellowship success rates between White & BAME over 5 yr. EPSRC has three types of fellowships: postdoctoral, early carrier and established career./1
A gap in the postdoctoral and early career fellowships means there is a big leak in the pipeline from completion of PhD to becoming independent principal investigators. We need more data on how these success rates are broken down into each fellowship category. /2
Fellowship applications first go through an admin office check, postal peer-review, panel shortlisting and then an interview. I would like to see at what stage we see this rejections happening. /3
Why do you think the race gap exist? Are BAME academics worse at writing good proposals? Is there bias in the peer-review college? Are BAME academics seen unfavorably at the interview panel? See my other tweet about panel membership. /4
