For many years now, large charities have moved away from raising funds through stating facts and statistics and moved to what is called 'emotional fundraising'. It's a technique that has been proven to work. The public are bored by strings of stats...

...tables, charts and are more likely to tune out to these kind of messages. But, run an ad with a scared child cowering in the corner of a darkened room, show an older person wandering an empty home, show a neglected dog shivering, matted in filth and fleas and people..

look at it because it resonates. Add an empathetic script delivered in the appropriate tone and people listen. Hit home with the message using emotive buzzwords and people connect. Finish it off with a simple strap line and the donation is guaranteed.

...how many of you have put your hand in your pocket to donate to a charity not because you know that X number of people are affected by it? Now, how many of you have done the same but because you know someone who has been affected by the condition the charity is...

This is why Farage and his like are on the rise.

Messages that are carefully shaped and targeted...

...aimed at emotion, not truth, and delivered with the appropriate tone to the people it is aimed at, and enabled by an establishment who facilitate it through a lack of meaningful investigation of the facts.

Few ask even the simplest of probing questions anymore..

...have it embezzled by the liars, cheats, charlatans and snake oil salesman (nod to @mrjamesob ) who seek to manipulate the facts to their own end.

Emotional fundraising works. That's why charities use it for delivering their life changing and supportive services...

...Political strategists have seen that it works. That's why they use it. Targeted advertising, emotion, imagery, buzzwords, slogans and straplines are NOT facts.

Question the message.
Question it again.
Seek out the facts.
Don't let the heart rule the head.
