Some takeaways from #CAJ19
1. Mainstream Media in Canada still has a systemic problem in its newsrooms & boardrooms-a lack of representation of #Indigenous & people of colour & lack of will by too many folks in positions of leadership to address it in a serious & sustained way.

2. We need to always ask “who is not present at the table.” Established journalists in mainstream newsrooms across Canada need to speak up & out about the lack of ethno-racial representation in their midst and use their personal power (agency) to influence & make change. #CAJ19
3. In last 30 yrs. serious gains have been made by women, mainly White women, in mainstream media in Canada. More women occupy positions of power in newsrooms & boardrooms. Their presence has made a real difference in editorial content/perspective. Change is possible. #CAJ19
4. Mainstream media orgs. need to scrutinize their own operations as vigorously as they scrutinize others. If the mainstream media demands civic institutions be accountable & transparent, as a “guardian of democracy” it must also be transparent & hold itself to account. #CAJ19
5. Mainstream media orgs. must be more forthcoming in providing data about who is represented in their newsrooms & boardrooms..who are making editorial decisions...who are the gatekeepers. It’s only w/ data that there can be a true measure of the progress being made. #CAJ19
6. There remain problems of systemic racism w/in mainstream media orgs across Canada.Just like the #Metoo
movement has brought the matter of sexual assault/harassment to the fore, there needs to be a greater openness to addressing issues of race & racism in the workplace. #CAJ19

7. Questions: Why in 2019 are there so few non-White columnists working for the mainstream newspapers of record in Canada ( @nationalpost @globeandmail @TheTorontoSun @LP_LaPresse @LeDevoir)? Why are there so few non-White folks in senior management @CBC @CTVNews & @globalnews?
8. When it comes to fighting for ethno-racial representation in CDN media newsrooms/boardrooms/management to paraphrase my friend
@andraydomise,
“ we need more comrades & fewer allies.” “Comrade” connotes steadfastness, courage, commitment, sacrifice & a fierce loyalty.

I think it applies to almost every mainstream media organization in Canada including the CBC.
What I would also say is that I am part of the CBC. And so I have a responsibility to help make it the best organization it can be. If that means using my voice to move it towards positive change then I will do it.
Ok. In what way? What is the problem?
