Today I went to Sweny's, the little Pharmacy that was immortalized in James Joyce's Ulysses (where Leopold Bloom stoppes by to buy a bar of lemon soap) and I was invited to stay for a reading of Finnegan's Wake. So much fun!
We read a few pages of Chapter 8, the Anna Livia chapter (apparently very famous). We all took turns reading a few sentences, guided by a moderator. I loved the discussions. So many Irish cultural references I'd not have gotten without speaking to locals.
The lovely ladies at the reading were teaching me Irish sayings and expressions. There was one I liked, "roughly made." They said people use that to make excuses for things they might not do well because they are in a hurry.
