And now (because no one asked)...

A complete (?) listing of every Hanna-Barbera/Ruby-Spears Scooby-Doo clone: a thread
*PREFACE*

H-B was notorious for cloning every successful idea they had eighty fold. Scooby was the most ridiculous example. My criteria for a clone is as simple as their shows: mystery solving and/or monsters with a pet. Sometimes one, the other, or both.

My current count is 22
Final note: I’m pretty sure this list is complete but because Hanna-Barbera’s library is so large I wouldn’t be surprised if I missed at least one or two. If I did let me know and I’ll add it.

Ruby-Spears creations are followed with the [RS] bracket

Let’s begin!
*Josie and the Pussycats*
Scooby-Doo with way more girls (and a cat) but everybody’s in a band

The first Scooby clone is a retool of the old Archie comic which itself is a retool of “It’s Josie” which had entirely different characters outside of Josie, Alexandra, and Melody. 😖
*Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space*
Scooby-Doo with the previous concept but now it’s “IN SPAAAACE”, the ghosts are all aliens, and there’s a second Scooby-Doo who is also an alien.

A continuation of the first series where its premise is only explained in its intro. 🤷🏾‍♂️
*The Funky Phantom*
Scooby-Doo with a non-talking bulldog Scooby-Doo and ghosts who are the sidekicks (an effeminate revolutionary war ghost and his snickering ghost cat)

One of several HB series animated in Australia which is why it looks so different than everything else.
*The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan*
Scooby-Doo with a VERY large Asian family (in a band), their dog, and occasionally Charlie Chan?!

Combining Josie’s band concept with (for some bizarre reason) a licensed cartoon Charlie Chan, this clone has the largest cast at 12 characters.
SIDENOTE: The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan is the *ONLY* screen version of Charlie Chan where he is played by an actual person of Chinese ancestry (Keye Luke) and not a white man (I think there were three Charlie Chan actors in total?) playing a Chinese stereotype.
*Speed Buggy*
Scooby-Doo but Scooby is the Mystery Machine is & Shaggy is his mechanic.

NOTE: Mark, Fred’s expy, is supposed to be Native American (revealed in an interview?) but you’d never know it b/c it’s never mentioned in the show & his skin is only darker in a crossover.
*Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids*
Scooby-Doo but they work for the government & use a supercomputer who is allergic to Scooby-Doo

Four undercover teen agents pose as a popular rock group. HBs answer to Filmations Hardy Boys. Hell if I know how they got away with the title.
*Goober and the Ghost Chasers*
Scooby-Doo but the gang are paranormal kit ghost chasers who use REAL ghosts to capture/unmask FAKE ghosts and Scooby-Doo has the power to randomly turn invisible but can’t control it.

Okay... this one is a LOT.

So under normal circumstances...
...theres nothing special about GatGC but for the first 11 eps the kids from The Partridge Family are regular chars (?!?!?) w/ the original actors reprising their roles. After that they vanish never to be referenced again! Years later, reruns were serialized w/ The Flintstones 🤨
*Inch High, Private Eye*
Scooby-Doo but the gang is cut in half (Fred/Shaggy & Daphne/Velma are combined + a large German Shepherd) & led by an actual detective w/ an actual agency & a transforming Mystery Machine.

SIDENOTE: Inch was voiced by Scrappy-Doo’s original voice actor.
*Dynomutt, Dog Wonder*
Scooby-Doo but now he’s Adam West Batman’s super-heroic robotic sidekick

My personal favorite of the Scooby clones that eventually grew into its own fun thing. Blue Falcon is basically chummy 60s Batman w/ a wacky robotic dog. A few years notable things...
Blue Falcon’s recurring enemy Mr. Hyde was a series 1 Scooby-Doo villain. Dynomutt was popular enough to crossover w/ the Scooby gang 3 times in his own show, cameo in Dexters Lab & Mystery Inc, & Blue Falcon focused in 2013s “Scooby-Doo & The Mask of the Blue Falcon” DTV movie.
*Clue Club*
Scooby-Doo but now there are 2 Scooby’s, the kids are friendly with the police, use a BCatSK comp & drive a non-talking Speed Buggy.

Clue Club is cribbed from everything popular before it. Alex Toth designed the chars. Remember Woofer & Wimper—they’ll return later.
*Jabberjaw*
Scooby-Doo but the setting is “Underwater Jetsons”, the kids are all in a band, the girls are transplants from Josie (minus Valerie) but w/ Fred & Shaggy expies & Scooby-Doo is now a shark that’s also Curly from the Three Stooges

I mean, Damn

Jabberjaw is a *LOT* 🤣
*Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels*
Scooby-Doo but the cast is entirely girls and Scooby-Doo is a caveman who doubles as a superhero.

His show wasn’t popular, but Cap alone was popular enough to return in the Saturday Morning versions of Flintstones and later, Flintstones Kids
*Woofer and Whimper, Dog Detectives*
Clue Club repackaged (butchered) w/ all kids removed.

That’s it.

Packaged w/ Skatebirds, this show only works b/c W&W broke the 4th wall on rare occasion & the human cast didnt understand or interact w/ the dogs like other Scooby clones. 🙄
*The Buford Files*
Scooby-Doo in the Deep South with bumbling small town cops. Also Scooby-Doo is a lethargic confederate bloodhound with an occasional girlfriend.

15 min shorts that were always paired with The Galloping Ghost. Show description on the second picture. A mess lol
*The Galloping Ghost*
Scooby-Doo but the cast is two girls & Scooby-Doo is a cranky “Miner-49er” ghost on an invisible horse.

See above pics for show description. Negligible clone as mysteries weren’t always the focus. Nugget Nose (lmao) helped them out when they got in trouble.
*Casper and the Angels*
Scooby-Doo but it’s Casper the Friendly Ghost EXCEPT the Ghostly Trio is now Hairy Scary (a hairy ghost who likes Casper), the cast is all girls (who are space cops) & the setting is The Jetsons

This and the next might be the biggest “wtf?!?” on the list.
*The New Shmoo*
Scooby-Doo but the kids work for a comic book company & Scooby-Doo is now the Shmoo.

For whatever ungodly reason the Shmoo from Li’l Abner became STUPID popular so H-B shoved him into everything from a blatant Scooby clone to having it meet the Flintstones TWICE.
A tiny interruption!

I’m doing this on my phone & seem to have hit Twitter’s mobile threading limit. So I’m going to pause here because the next entry is... needlessly complicated.

Also, I need to start a new draft that I can easily plug into this one. Yes, there are THAT MANY.
Don’t fret though! We’re at the early 80s so we’ve almost hit the end.

Keep in mind that while all these shows were happening, Scooby-Doo itself was STILL CONTINUING and well into the Scrappy years.

Exhausting, isn’t it?

Here — have a Scooby-Dum pop figure in this trying time.
From this point I have to plug the remaining entries in manually because Twitter sucks.

I’ll note at the end when the thread is finished.

Aaaaaand here we go!...
*The Flintstones Comedy Show II*
Ok... I gotta split this into 2 parts b/c FCH/S was an hour long Saturday morning ver of The Flintstones w/ lots of new segments—two of which fit the Scooby clone criteria.

Before I get started I need to explain this dual prehistoric nightmare.
Comedy Hour is the original version. It didnt have any Scooby clones but featured new Flintstones segments. From there it became Comedy Show, a 30 min repackaging. From there it became Fred Flintstone & Friends — this is where Goober and the Ghost Chasers repeats were serialized.
FROM THERE we get—IN ORDER—The New Fred and Barney show (new 30 min Flintstones revival episodes), Fred and Barney meet The Thing (the infamous “Thing Ring do your thing!” show), and Fred and Barney meet The Shmoo. The last one is where The New Shmoo (see above) came into being.
SIDENOTE: Look at this terrible mess. Just. Look. At. It.

AWFUL. Hanna Barbera just did whatever the hell they wanted to lol
FINALLY, from there we get the SECOND Flintstones Comedy Show which was a 60-90 minute show with 6 new segments. In other countries it was known as Flintstone Frolics. THIS is where the three Flintstones Scooby clones take place.

*whew* Let’s begin.
*TFCS2 Pt.1: Pebbles, Dino & Bamm-Bamm*
Scooby-Doo w/ a slightly aged-down-teenage ver of Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm solving prehistoric ghost mysteries. Dino is now Scooby. Select cast members from The Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm show appear w/ them on occasion

Read this *absurdity* aloud lol
*TFCS2 Pt.2: Captain Caveman
CC & The Teen Angels X Hong Kong Phooey

But replace the TA’s w/ Betty & Wilma as reporters working for an expy of Lou Grant from The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Cavey is Superman. B&W are Lois Lane. They fight villains and/or mystery solve. It depends LOL
*Fangface/Fangface & Fangpuss* [RS]
Scooby-Doo but now Shaggy turns into Scooby-Doo who is also a werewolf.

It’s highly ironic that when Ruby-Spears split from Hanna-Barbera to form their own studio their first cartoon was a Scooby clone. Fangface
Is so blatant a clone that...
...its episode titles were shameless riffs on Scooby’s (“A Blank Thing in a Rhyming Fling”) and in season two the series was rebranded to give him a baby nephew (Baby Fangs/Fangpuss) that was blatantly Scrappy-Doo. Hilariously, introducing Fangpuss messed up its own continuity 🤣
*Rickety Rocket* [RS]

OKAY...

Scooby-Doo but all the kids are black, the setting is The Jetsons & they hang out in a junkyard so it’s also Fat Albert IN SPAAAAACE. Also Scooby-Doo is a junkyard Mystery Machine.

I’ve spoken on this before. One of the kids is named Sunstroke. 😐
*Mister T* [RS]

Combined the 80s “cartoon focusing on a popular action star” idea with kids who travel the globe and solve mysteries/crime. Mr. T was a gymnastics coach, there was a little white kid who dressed & talked like Mr. T for no reason, and a boxer dog with a mohawk

😭
To boil it down to basics—the Mr. T cartoon series is what you’d get it you crossed Chuck Norris Karate Commanados with the Scooby-Doo formula.

This gif is all you need to know about the show. 🙃
And that’s the end of our thread!

From this point on Saturday morning Scooby-Doo clones had fallen out of favor and the last cartoon in the main Scooby canon would be Pup Named in 1988. After that, Scooby-Doo wouldn’t be seen again until Zombie Island (thank heavens).
To further drive home Scooby’s retirement — it’s next full, non-DTV iteration would not be until Whats New, Scooby-Doo in 2001.

I hope you enjoyed the thread. I’ve spoken about doing this before (and put a lot of work into it (because I hate myself lol).
