because of the character limit, i’ve put the main facts about the ladies, but i urge you to do some research if you’re interested!
SAPPHO (died circa 580 BC)
-greek lesbian poet
-lived on the island of lesbos, which is where the word lesbian originated
-known for her lyric poetry, often about women she loved
-very few of her poems survived and when know very little about her
ANNE LISTER (1791-1840, UK)
-lesbian
-a businesswoman who owned land and managed her own coal business
-nicknamed “gentleman jack” for her masculine sense of style
-a polymath
-kept diaries which included her relationships, all written in a code created by her and her first lover
JOSEPHINE BAKER (1906-1975)
-american born french entertainer
-bisexual
-first woc to be star in a major motion picture (zouzou 1934) and become a world famous entertainer
-had extra marital affairs with women throughout her life
JULIE D’AUBIGNY (1670-1707)
-also known as mademoiselle maupin
-bisexual
-famous french actress, opera singer and swordswoman
-famous for seducing women at parties then challenging their husbands to a duel
-went to a convent just to sleep with a nun, then burned it down
THE LADIES OF LLANGOLLEN (late 18th-early 19th century)
-upper class irish women eleanor butler + sarah ponsonby who moved to wales for retirement to have a romantic non-sexual relationship
-they became famous and even had visitors such as queen charlotte and poet lord byron
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE (1820-1910)
-british founder of modern nursing
-also known as the lady with the lamp
-organised care for wounded soldiers in the crimean war
-loved three women passionately throughout her life+hated everything women were expected to do (courting etc)
EMILY DICKINSON (1830-1886)
-american poet
-bisexual
-had a passionate relationship with susan gilbert, who she met at university
-gilbert eventually married dickinsons brother but the two maintained their passionate relationship through letters and visits
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (1884-1962)
-american political figure and activist
-bisexual
-married to president franklin d. roosevelt
-maintained a relationship with journalist lorena “hick” hickok and sent each other very passionate letters
VIRGINIA WOOLF (1882-1941)
-english writer and feminist
-bisexual
-had many mental health problems which caused rifts in relationships
-had a long term passionate relationship with rita sacksville-west, who helped woolf to be diagnosed with her mental illnesses
LILI ELBE (1882-1931)
-danish transgender woman
-was the first woman to have gender reassignment surgery
-married to gerda wegener, who helped lili through the process of the surgeries
-wegener passed elbe off as her cousin to allow her to dress as a woman in public
FRIDA KAHLO (1907-1954)
-mexican artist
-bisexual
-first mexican artist to ben featured at the louvre
-had an affair with actress tina modotti, who ended up introducing kahlo to her future husband, diego rivera
