How #Hawkeye (Clint Barton) became deaf in the comics; a thread.
Y'all always seem very interested whenever I talk about Clint's deafness, so I guess this will be a nice thread. Let's go!
1) As a kid, Clint grew up with an abusive father. Eventually, those abuses damaged his hearing.

The doctor said that, hopefully, it was temporarily, so we can assume Clint's hearing healed over time.
2) In Hawkeye (1983) #4, Crossfire used sound waves to control Hawkeye and Mockingbird, but Clint had a plan: he put a hyper sonic arrowhead in his mouth, escaping Crossfire's brainwashing. However, that damaged Clint's eardrums, making him 80% deaf in both ears.
This almost prevented his relationship with Mockingbird to happen, as you can see bellow, but she caught up with him.
It's important to notice that Clint initially refused to use the hearing aids, but later started using miniature ones.
After 'Heroes Reborn', in 1998, the Marvel Universe was rebuilt by Franklin Richards, but he didn't know Hawkeye was deaf. Therefore, Clint's hearing wasn't damaged anymore.
3) 16 years later (a.k.a. 2014), in the 15th issue of Matt Fraction and David Aja's critically acclaimed run, a villain know as the Clown stabbed Clint's ears, deafening him again.
This time, his deafness is a big, very important plot point. In Hawkeye (2012) #19, most dialogues are spoken in ASL and we can see how Clint's lip reading works.
I would like to notice that David Aja, the artist, is also credited as one of the letterers for that issue. It could be because he drew the ASL signs or because some of the letters look handmade. However, he wasn't credited as a letterer in issue #11, which had similar letters.

And now he's using regular-sized, visible (and purple, of course!) hearing aids made by Tony Stark, although All-New Hawkeye depicts them as miniature ones.
Fortunately, Fraction/Aja's Hawkeye became so popular that now Clint's deafness is shown in many series after that one, such as Hawkeye vs. Deadpool, All-New Hawkeye and the latest West Coast Avengers run.

Thanks, bros!
And, even if his hearing isn't a plot point, some artists don't forget about it. In the panels bellow, from Hawkeye (2016) #16, with art by Leonardo Romero, you can see Clint's hearing aids whenever the POV is close to him.

(even tho they weren't there in the previous issues)
In West Coast Avengers #1's first page, by artist Stefano Caselli, you can see the hearing aids if you look closely.
Aaaand in WCA #5-7, artist Daniele Di Nicuolo definitely didn't forget about them! The hearing aids were useful for the plot in #7, but Di Nicuolo drew them in his previous issues as well.
(yes, I always keep an eye out for his hearing aids in every panel)
So I guess that's the thread. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed it! đź’ś
