Egypt, day 3 - Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Colossi. Exhausting and exhilarating. Nearing 100 degrees, and the sun is murderous. I chose not to pay extra $ for the right to photograph inside tombs, not because of $ but because flash is incredibly damaging to the /1
2- astonishing colors. Even without cameras, expelled CO2 from our breath is slowly deteriorating these magnificent tombs, which may fade and crumble entirely within the next 100 years. My second visit to the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Hatshepsut lacked the punch of /2
3- that first experience, but maybe it’s because the place was so much more crowded this time. I paid the $70 charge for access to the tomb of Nefertari (not to be confused with Nefertiti), by far the most amazingly preserved and colorful of all the tombs. Still breathtaking. /3
4- Because of the extra cost, there were no visitors. For several minutes I stood alone in an alcove and felt the same wonder as the first time. It’s my favorite experience in Egypt. Since I have no photos of the tombs, here is a shot of the Valley. #GlobetrottingLife
