Today marks the 5 year anniversary of Topacio Reynoso Pacheco’s death. On April 13th 2014, Topacio, a 16-year old anti-mining activist, youth leader, artist, poet, & musician, was shot in Mataquescuintla, Guatemala. She died from her injuries the next day.
Topacio was a vocal opponent of the Escobal silver mine, brought into operation by Tahoe Resources and taken over recently by another Canadian company–Pan American Silver. This project has faced vibrant & constant opposition from impacted communities since it was first announced.
We remembered Topacio today by lighting candles, bringing flowers, telling stories, listening to a recording of her poetry and a poem by her brother, and reflecting on what five years of honouring her memory has meant for our activism.
A few days after her death, Topacio’s mother, Irma Pacheco, spoke at a memorial: "My daughter, you left your mark. I am not crying out of pain, I am crying for justice. We will fight to achieve your dream, so that one day the mining companies leave.”
Topacio's murder 5 yrs ago today is one of the worst & most heartbreaking of reminders of what the impacts of mining can truly look like, and of why solidarity work with communities resisting Cdn mining–and with all those who defend their right to life and territory–is vital.
Topacio, presente! We continue to call for justice for your murder and will continue to fight to realize your dream of a world free from mining injustice. #TopacioVive
Today marks 6 years since Topacio was killed. Killed for resisting a Canadian mining project.

We are resharing this thread from when we gathered together one year ago to honour her. Join us in remembering this young land defender, poet, artist, youth leader. Rest in power ❤️
