1/x Thread on how Boston College students broke into and vandalized the ROTC offices in 1970.

This led to Boston College kicking ROTC off campus for about 15 years! https://twitter.com/ML_ine/status/1114544603544338432
2/x On Tuesday May 5th 1970 students held a rally to protest against ROTC.

300-400 students then marched to the Roberts Center (athletic arena) where the ROTC offices were held.

(Imagine BC students chanting these things today…)
3/x 10-15 students broke in and vandalized the ROTC office.
4/x “Aftermath of ROTC farewell party” was the caption in The Heights

The Heights used to be somewhat cool as you will see in a later cartoon.
5/x Apparently the university security force was present but did not stop the students.

The chief of security intimated the order not to intervene came from the administration.

How would BC and BCPD react to this today! (hint NOT like this)
6/x At the rally student leader Tom Gallagher revealed the plan was to shut down the office for the remainder of the year.
7/x The next morning 100 students returned to make sure the ROTC offices were closed.
8/x In Oct the Board of Directors approved the proposal of the Academic Senate (yeah BC didn’t used to be so authoritarian) to remove ROTC from campus in May.

Students broke in and trashed the office, and BC responded by NOT disciplining anyone and kicking ROTC off campus.
9/x The Heights, which again used to be cool, published this.

“It appears that your diagnosis is correct, doctor” 👩‍⚕️
10/x The cartoon ran with the editorial “ROTC offed” 💀
11/x Imagine the Heights writing this today! (I know, you can’t)

“Conjuring images of a bastard dinosaur in its death throes, the Board has given a clear example to the rest of the University of the uselessness of the body.”🦕
12/x In 1984, 42 of 62 community members voted against bringing ROTC back at a community forum.
13/x But by 1986 the ROTC program was back on campus after partially returning in the previous few years.
14/x The Roberts Center, the athletic arena, where the ROTC offices were housed in 1970.
