The language of the #Thugs
( #Hindi / Urdu ṭhag ठग from #Sanskrit स्थग sthaga i.e. a cheat)
Thugs were well-organized confederacy of professional assassins who operated in gangs throughout India between 1300 to late 1800. They had a secret argot known as ramāsī रमासी.
These Thugs were called phām̐sīgar फाँसीगर (i.e. a strangler) in Deccan. Thugs greeted any stranger with aule bhāī rām rām औले भाई राम राम or aule khām̐ salām औले खाँ सलाम, to ascertain whether the stranger is a Thug or not. Here Aule meant a Thug.
A Thug gang consisted of scouts (tilhā), inveiglers (sothā), stranglers (bhurtote), the strangler’s assistants who held the victim’s hands (chumoseā), those who carried the dead bodies away (bojhā), those who cut up the dead bodies (kuthāe), & the gravediggers (luhgā).
Signal for strangling was given by the head of the gang by saying - taṃbākū lāo (bring the tobacco) or āe ho to gharī calo (If you have come, then let's go home.)
