Thanks to RMIM, I was extremely privileged to see and hear from a living legend - Sudha Malhotra. At 84, she can still sing wonderfully. She was charming, witty and spirited. Here’s Sudha ji talking about the only Hindi film song she composed Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jao
Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jao To (Didi, 1959)
Singers: Sudha Malhotra, Mukesh
MD: Sudha Malhotra
Lyricist: Sahir Ludhianvi
The discovery of the day for me was an album of ghazals Sudha Malhotra recorded, with music by Jagjit Singh - Ghazals In A Mood Of Love. A roomful of music aficionados had not heard of the album, so she insisted that we play one ghazal from the album.
The ghazal was Aashna Ho Kar Agar. This is a lovely composition by Jagjit Singh but what was striking to me was the maturity/vazan in Sudha Malhotra’s voice - something we hadn’t heard in her film songs. Do listen.
And how pretty is she on the cover of the album!
