I’m going to create an ongoing thread on my progress towards Journey Through Twin Peaks. There are 8 steps to get there (I’m framing this a bit differently than the above post, although the path is the same), and individual steps within these. I’ll update when each is finished...
1A-N) Create Patreon podcasts through October: 7 main episodes & 7 Twin Peaks rewatches
2A-C) Finish Veronica Mars viewing diary for 2 seasons & a feature film
3) Publish Veronica Mars viewing diary leading up to the premiere of the Hulu revival (coverage of the revival can run concurrently with other work)
4A-E) Research Mark Frost: finish Hill Street Blues season 5, watch Buddy Faro, watch/rewatch available films/TV episodes, read/re-read The 6 Messiahs, research context (including @TheBicksPod coverage of all his work)
5A-C) Create a 3 1/2 Minute Review video essay and 2 Side by Side video essays
6A-?) Create Journey Through Twin Peaks (I’ll update as I complete various components, not all of which I can foresee now)
7) Re-design my website with a fresh homepage that is easier to navigate
8A-G) Once a week for 7 weeks, publish non-Twin Peaks video essays leading up to...
9) ...Part 5 of Journey Through Twin Peaks a week after the last of those video essays, hopefully this fall (here is an overview of the planned structure, with weekly individual chapters of Part 6 following the all-at-once premiere of Part 5)
As of now, I’m around 8 episodes into #2 (Veronica Mars s2), 8 episodes into #4 (Hill Street Blues s5) & have done preliminary work for #5 (outlines for 3 1/2 Minute review of Wind in the Willows & Side by Side: The Big Chill/Return of the Secaucus 7). Looking forward to more...
Update: finished 1A (the podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 2), 13 to go in that category & onto the podcast for ep. 3...
Update: finished 1B (the podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 3 which will be published in May), 12 to go in that category & on to the podcast for ep. 4...
Update: finished 1C (the podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 4 which will be published in June), 11 to go in that category...
Update: finished 1D (the podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 5 which will be published in July). 10 to go in that category, and that's now 4 TP podcasts completed since starting this thread...
Update: finished 1E (the podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 6 which will be published in August). 9 to go in that category, including a couple more Twin Peaks rewatches for the season 1 finale & season 2 premiere...
Update: finished 1F (the April main podcast w/ John Thorne interview). 8 to go in this category...
Update: finished 1G (the season 1 finale episode of my Twin Peaks rewatch podcast) - 7 to go in this category (half-done)...
Update: finished 1H (May episode of my main podcast, featuring Twin Peaks books) - 6 to go in this category but I've spent the past 2 weeks working on all of these simultaneously so I expect most if not all to finish today...
Update: finished 1I (the podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 8 which will be published in October). 5 to go in that category, all main podcast episodes since this was the last rewatch I needed to complete before Journey...
Update: Good news! To my surprise it looks like despite recent doubts I WILL finish this batch of podcasts before I hit an impending bump in the road. First up - 1J (the October episode comparing the structure of La Dolce Vita & Fire Walk With Me, among several topics)...
Update: finished 1K, the June episode of the main podcast, introducing my new approach: Twin Peaks Cinema, talking about various films in the context of TP & Twin Peaks Reflections focused on characters, locations, storylines, and tie-in Lynch/Peaks works outside of s1/s2/FWWM...
Update: finished 1L, the July episode of the main podcast which kicks off my Twin Peaks Cinema series with Fire in the Sky (as well as new Twin Peaks Reflections including a quick comparison between the Teresa Banks case & Inland Empire)...
Update: finished 1M, the August episode of the main podcast with Our Town as Twin Peaks Cinema (plus Twin Peaks Reflections connecting the arc of the Laura investigation w/ The Elephant Man)...
Update: finished 1N, the September episode of the main podcast featuring The Double Life of Veronique on Twin Peaks Cinema. And...that's a wrap for step 1 on the path!
After a month and a half, all of my Patreon podcasts are now completed through the end of October. This was probably (& hopefully) the biggest hurdle to creating new Journey videos. Now on to Veronica Mars... https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112801346548367361
Back to Neptune in the next few days as I move to step 2 of the path to Journey Through Twin Peaks https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112801657509875712
Just a note regarding step #3 - turns out Hulu announced all 8 episodes of the new Veronica Mars will premiere on July 26. So here’s my plan...
I will publish the viewing diary entries for seasons 2, 3, and the movie (along with a few relevant announcements and directories) one a day between June 8 & July 25.
On July 26, into the weekend as quickly as I’m able, I will marathon a viewing diary for the brand new season 4, pausing after each episode to write & publish a review before moving on to the next one. Should be fun!
(This discovery was perfectly timed for me to start another thread, of my Veronica Mars coverage, this morning - adding the lead tweet here too for reference) https://twitter.com/lostinthemovies/status/1129383394968834048?s=21
Update: finished 2A, the Veronica Mars season 2 viewing diary. Already several episodes into season 3...
Update: finished 2B, the Veronica Mars season 3 viewing diary. I've watched the film but not yet reviewed it - I'm very close to completing step 2 of this process and moving onto a more directly-related-to-Journey step soon...
Update: finished 2C, the Veronica Mars film viewing diary entry which concludes step 2/the original Veronica Mars cycle.
Step 2 of my path to Journey Through Twin Peaks is finished, step 3 (the publication of the viewing diary I wrote in step 2) is scheduled & ready to go next week; meanwhile I can start researching Mark Frost... https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112801657509875712
Victorian England, New Orleans, and Hill Street - among other locations will host step 4 of the path to Journey Through Twin Peaks https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112810823209107456
As step 4 continues (I've been watching a bunch of Frost TV episodes this morning), I'm also officially initiating step 3 as I began publishing new Veronica Mars posts this morning... https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112807750390697984
Update: finished 4A, the 7 available episodes of Mark Frost’s Buddy Faro
Update: finished 4B, all of Hill Street Blues through season 5 (the last Mark Frost-penned episode). I watched a lot of other Frost material this weekend & will read/watch more in the coming weeks...
Update: finished 4C, watching/re-watching Frost’s other available TV episodes & films (this included re-watches of Storyville & Fantastic 4 w/ 1st time views of Greatest Game Ever Played, American Chronicles, On the Air, and Deadly Look of Love)
Update: finished 4D, researching Frost through a few selective interviews, a dugpa forum, and the whole @TheBicksPod re-cap of his career. Obviously I’ll read/see/hear more as the series develops but for now that was what I wanted to hit. Now only books remain in category 4...
As I continue to read Mark Frost's book, I'm simultaneously jumping ahead to step 7 (preparing but the site re-design, which will go live within a couple months). I'm itching to find out what I can do with available templates and other possibilities... https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112812061057343490
10) Adding one more step - a bit out of order - for me to finish before Journey Through Twin Peaks is published: my interview (already conducted, not yet edited) with Martha Nochimson, which will probably go up as a bonus public podcast episode in mid-August
Update: So just to keep track of the now-10 steps to Journey Through Twin Peaks, #1 & 2 are totally done, #3, #4, #7 & #10 are ongoing (#3 will be finished in a couple weeks). Should be able to begin work on the new TP videos themselves within a month if not sooner...
The first 3 steps of my path to Journey Through Twin Peaks are now officially complete with the publication of the last entry in my Veronica Mars viewing diary. Some of the other, ongoing intermediate steps are either close or virtually done already. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112807750390697984?s=20
After moving it ahead of other steps, then 2 months of intense focus, 7) my grand re-design of Lost in the Movies is completely finished (links checked & everything). All I have left is 3 non-Peaks video essays and then it’s time to begin work on Journey. https://twitter.com/lostinthemovies/status/1112812061057343490?s=21
Beginning step 5 tonight by resuming work on my 3 1/2 Minute Review video I initiated in the spring (before I kicked off this current schedule)... https://twitter.com/lostinthemovies/status/1112811177950826497?s=21
11A-B) Adding a slightly out-of-order step to fill the gap between now & when the Journey is ready (winter-ish). _ublishing at least 1 (maybe 2) seasons of Mad Men viewing diaries each Monday, film reviews & updates each Wednesday. All written - just need slight editing/revision.
Update: finished 5A, the 3 1/2 Minute Review video on The Wind in the Willows (+ a bonus video since I had more to say/show than 210 seconds allowed); moving on to the 2 Side by Side videos next (continuing w/ the notes I began on The Big Chill vs. Return of the Secaucus 7)...
12A-J) Adding a final step to the process...besides the already-written Mad Men pieces, film reviews & other updates I'll be posting in the next 5 months, I'll of course need to keep my Patreon podcast going month to month. That's 10 episodes before the video rollout begins...
And with that, I should tentatively note 2 things. First, while I'm loathe to commit to a deadline (they always) I *hope* to begin publishing Journey Through Twin Peaks S3 edition the weekend before the show's 30th anniversary (April 8). That'll hopefully give me plenty of time.
The plan now is for those videos to continue the schedule I'm using now on my site - Mondays and Wednesdays, so twice a week. The same would go for the non-Twin Peaks videos I'm releasing before Journey so I'll be doing that step in about half the time.
Secondly, although I've occasionally taken a few of the above steps simultaneously, I've mostly finished one task at a time and avoided direct work on Journey until everything else is done. But now I'm getting pretty close and an important date for my series is approaching, so...
On October 1, the 5th anniversary of my first Journey Through Twin Peaks video upload, I'll celebrate by officially beginning work on new videos behind the scenes, cutting an opening sequence I've long been planning.
From that point, I'll focus on rewatching Twin Peaks, Lynch films & films by other Twin Peaks episode directors/collaborators (there's a section planned on their contributions to the original series in the buildup to the s3 premiere), then gathering notes & writing a script.
I'll balance that work with wrapping up my 2 remaining non-Twin Peaks video essays (I have a big library of clips ready for The Big Chill vs. Secaucus 7) & creating a backlog of podcasts (November - March). Hopefully by early November I can focus entirely on editing Journey.
As always, check in on this thread for updates.
Step 6 has officially begun tonight https://twitter.com/lostinthemovies/status/1112811676045381632?s=21
Update: finished 6A yesterday - a first pass at the opening montage of the new videos. I’ll probably tackle it again after scripting & working on the rest (first I’ve got a lot of watching/rewatching to do), maybe even radically revise, but I like where it’s at right now.
Update: finished 6B, rewatching all of the special features from the original series & film (aside from the directors’ commentaries which I’ll listen to later). Now begins a sprawling, somewhat out of order rewatch mixing episodes, Lynch films, and films by other Peaks directors.
Update: after a month of working on a few different steps, finally finished 11A - all my non-podcast content from now thru early March. 11B will be publishing them, two a week, from now to then.
Since it's been a while, here's a general update - I have 2 remaining non-Twin Peaks videos (1 has all the clips and narration ready, just needs editing), and 12 podcast episodes to record, which I've already begun recording piecemeal. Mixing this with viewing related to Journey.
The viewing has been re-watching episodes of the old series, usually grouped by director along w/ films by those episode directors. This feeds into Part 5 of the videos which will look back on the creative process of s1/s2 (and Lynch/Frost), leading up to my s3 focus.
Since some of these episodes are being covered in my podcasts too, a lot of this is killing two birds with one stone - hard to say where Journey and non-Journey work begins/ends at this point but hopefully within a month it's all purely related to the videos...
Oh, and make that 9, not 12, podcast episodes! Will be down to even fewer quite soon.
Update: finished 12A - the rewatch podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 9 which was just published on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/31609545  9 to go in this category (although one of the last ones is almost done)
Update: finished 12B, the November episode of the main podcast comparing Lost Highway with Twin Peaks and updating patrons on my Journey Through Twin Peaks progress
Update: finished 12C - the rewatch podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 10 which was just published on Patreon ( https://www.patreon.com/posts/32295954 ). So there's 7 to go in this category, then 2 non-TP videos & I can focus exclusively on Journey.
Update: finished 12D - the rewatch podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 11; there's 6 to go in this category
Update: finished 12E - the rewatch podcast Twin Peaks ep. 12, leaving 5 to go in this category...
Update: finished 12F - the December episode of the main podcast comparing River's Edge with Twin Peaks ( https://www.patreon.com/posts/episode-62-twin-32637121?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=postshare), leaving 4 to go in this category...
Update: finished 12G - the rewatch podcast for Twin Peaks ep. 13, leaving 3 to go in this category...
Update: finished 12H - the January episode of the main podcast, my most sprawling ever, leaving 2 to go in this category (1 of which is complete except for a few finishing touches)...
Update - finished 12I - the February episode of the main podcast, on Mary Sweeney's film Baraboo, along with...
Update: ...finished 12J - the March episode of the main podcast, on Mark Frost's film Storyville. This concludes all the Patreon podcast work I wanted to do before focusing on Journey Through Twin Peaks, so...
...Step 12 is finally complete. All that's left before I focus my online work entirely on Journey is to complete 2 non-Twin Peaks video essays, one of which is ready for editing. Inching along like Alvin Straight on his tractor, but the horizon's in sight. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1178335138020839426?s=20
Update: finished 5B, the Side by Side video essay on The Big Chill & Return of the Secaucus 7. Based on a piece I wrote in 2012, the video was first announced in 2016, and will finally premiere end of March 2020. Timing worked out pretty well to discuss generational politics.
Update: finished 11B, publishing film reviews and a Mad Men viewing diary through the fall and winter...
...so I finished step 11. For the next few months all my public posts will be video essays: non-Twin Peaks in March, Twin Peaks starting in April. I'm almost done creating the former, after which I'll focus on the latter. Expect an announcement video soon. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1173220396151255042?s=20
*(After months of keeping this thread in the proper order, I accidentally made a fork in the road. So I'm going to take this moment to fix it by re-posting some completed steps here - sorry for the confusion!)
Update: finished 8A by posting this announcement... https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1237588966699757568
...and this Montage video, kicking off a March run of video essays that will lead to Journey Through Twin Peaks. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1237745467607433216
And of course I should add to this thread that my new account @JourneyPeaks has been created in light of the upcoming series. Check it out and follow!
Update: finished 5C - I have a few tweaks left to make to the video (and need to finish writing the cross-posts for all of March's videos), but I've basically cut my last Side by Side video essay, on 2 Fellini films, and with it...
...I finished step 5, the video essays I wanted to complete before Journey Through Twin Peaks (now they just remain to be published). With that, I've finished working on all of my non-Journey pieces. Path to kicking off the new series is almost complete. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112811177950826497
Update: finished 6C, reading both drafts of Lynch's unproduced Ronnie Rocket as well as a bit of commentary. Definitely some Retuen connections there (not in this particular snippet, I just included it because, well, how could I not)
Updated: finished 8B by publishing this Montage video featuring The Double Life of Veronique & Amy Winehouse https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1239550627954515970?s=20
Update: finished 8C by publishing these videos exploring different Wind in the Willows adaptations and random tangents https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1240392685804027909?s=19
Update: finished 6D - since October, I've been slowly viewing/re-viewing Lynch works + at least one film by every Twin Peaks episode director + all the s1/s2 episodes (very spread out & out of order, grouped by director alongside the films). Finally wrapped it tonight...
Update: finished 8D by publishing the first of two final Cinepoems, this one combing Whitman & Melville poems about the Civil War https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1242160614606241798?s=20
Update: finished 6E - re-reading all 5 of the Twin Peaks books. Now I've already begun a fast-patched binge-watch of the original series (whose episodes I watched, scattered and out-of-order, over the past 6 months) before my first s3 rewatch in at least a year and a half.
Slight change of plans going forward...as I wrap up all of the steps outlined in this thread and prepare to post new Journey, I still have plenty of work for the spring and summer. So I'll soon be creating a new thread - "The Path *Through* Journey Through Twin Peaks" - for that.
I'll wind this thread down with the remaining steps up to creation/publication of first Journey 2020 chapter on April 8. That also includes, publicly, 2 more non-TP video essays + that first chapter and, behind the scenes, finishing a s1/s2 rewatch, an all-day s3 marathon, and...
13) ...One last add-on preliminary step, since I'd like to have this up for the 30th anniversary of the pilot on April 8 as well: my Patreon rewatch podcast episode for ep. 14, the killer's reveal. I'll begin work on that today when I reach the episode in my s1/s2 rewatch.
Update: finished 8E by publishing the final Cinepoem, plus the compilation of all Cinepoems into one video (and screenshots for all the films) https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1242798517237755907?s=20
Update: finished 6F, the one-day s3 rewatch marathon yesterday - my first viewing in over year (this morning I'll outline the relevant chapter)
Update: finished 8F, my first Side by Side video essay in 4 years, first teased at the end of a video way back then (see embedded tweet for a thread of related resources from myself and others)

https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1244609852288249857?s=20
Update: finished 6G, outlining chapter 33 which will focus on the chronological journey through the new Twin Peaks. This outline ended up being more like a rough draft/sketch as I assembled it. This video will go up on May 21 - the 3rd anniversary of the premiere.
Updated: finished 6H, my weeklong sorta-marathon rewatch of s1/s2/FWWM after dipping into various episodes over many months.
Update: finished 6I, re-visiting my original Journey videos so I can pick up where I left off. Now I am in the midst of material having to do with the long in-between period of old and new Twin Peaks, including the run-up to s3...
Update: finished 8G by publishing my Fellini Side by Side - the last of my March run-up videos which also circles back to that first montage. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1245327567118381056?s=20
That concludes step 8, leaving only my work on/publication of the first Journey chapter and the killer's reveal rewatch podcast episode before this thread is concluded. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112812819563601922?s=20
Update: finished 6J, re-visiting relevant work on the "in-between" years of '92-'17, including the run-up to s3 (also discovered some DavidLynch dot com era works I'd missed a few steps back). Now I am ready to outline the first chapter.
Update: finished 6K, outlining chapter 29 including gathering my notes from the past 3 1/2 years. I'm now putting together the clips and images to use as I prepare to write the narration.
Update: finished 6L, gathering media to use in chapter 29. Folks, there's a lot of it.
Update: finished 6M, scripting my narration for chapter 29 (which is long enough that this might end up being 29 & 30). Wanted to record but the conditions weren't right so I'll do that tonight. For now, preparing my ep. 14 podcast.
Update: finished 6N, recording my narration for chapter 29. And promptly realized I am going to need to cut it down to - seriously - about 20-25% of its current length lol (which should actually be pretty easy, I can see the contours of what’s needed). Been podcasting too long!
Update: finished 6O, editing the video for chapter 29 late last night.
As it turned out, the Bernie announcement kind of consumed yesterday and I abandoned my goal to post this on the anniversary of the pilot. So probably next week instead, and I'm removing it as a part of this "Path to..." process/thread. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1243520663903776769?s=20
Update: finished 6P by publishing the first new chapter of Journey Through Twin Peaks in 5 years. https://www.lostinthemovies.com/2020/04/journey-through-twin-peaks-is-back.html
That means, first of all, that I've completed step 6; the video part is now completed and shared. https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1112811676045381632?s=20
It also means this thread is completed.

At some point, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, I'll make a new thread, "The Path *Through* Journey Through Twin Peaks" so that curious viewers can follow along with my progress in creating the new videos and occasional side projects.
As I'm not quite ready to kick off the new "Path through" thread yet, I'll just leave a few interim steps here. Today I completed my April Patreon podcasts, which ballooned into one of my longest episodes ever (a 3-parter). Includes Laura (1944) as my "Twin Peaks Cinema" topic.
Oh, and yes, this includes the Ep. 14 coverage which I recently published as well: https://twitter.com/LostInTheMovies/status/1250067800229654537?s=20
And this evening I finished editing several film reviews I wrote a year ago, in case I need that backlog for a slow week this spring or summer (I plan to post *something* every Wednesday, usually a Journey video or Patreon podcast round-up).
I finally finished organizing/transferring notes from the past 2 1/2 years into their respective chapters in a document. Around 40 pages long! There will be a lot to draw from here.
And that's now *officially* a wrap on this thread. You can follow my progress THROUGH the videos and intervening projects through the spring, summer, and (maybe) fall in this thread: https://twitter.com/JourneyPeaks/status/1252680966663012354?s=20
