Someone asked me a great question this morning about how Jungkook can sound so crisp and clean in these live performances, so I wanted to talk about something he does really well: focusing his sound.
If you listen to the recent unplugged performances, the concert clips, his studio covers and songs, or his vlives, you’ll notice that Jungkook has this sort of crisp quality to his voice that almost makes it sound too perfect.
Part of this comes from the natural qualities of his voice: since he’s a lyric tenor, he has a lot of lightness and sweetness to his voice that can add to that crisp clarity.
But more importantly, this kind of sound speaks to his ability to focus his singing, whether he’s recording or performing live!
What I mean by this is that Jungkook uses specific techniques to sort of shoot his voice clearly into the air and into the mic, minimizing any extra sounds. He also controls his breathing to appear after notes and words in a very subtle way.
In this way, his voice is like a beam, like a really crisp and focused beam, into the mic - this makes him sound super clear. Other critics have noticed his ability to sing right into the “center” of the mic, too.
So aside from focusing and pointing his sound into the mic, what other techniques contribute to this? Well, if you watch him sing, you’ll notice that he doesn’t really open his mouth that wide or move his lips a lot.
This helps him keep that focused-ness to his voice, since he doesn’t lose any sound opening his mouth too wide or moving his lips around too much.
My choir teacher taught us this quarter that this kind of lack of movement also helps give a lot more power to the voice. We were singing really belty numbers and she advised us to move our mouths as little as possible to help our sound.
So the combination of not moving his mouth a lot, singing effortlessly, and then singing like a beam into the mic all comes together to create that beautiful, clean sound that he’s known for. 💕🐰
