Los argumentos de Hayek contra el socialismo son menos directos que los del Mises. Esto puede explicarse por el hecho de que se desarrollaron originalmente como una extensión de los argumentos de éste, y luego se desplegaron por sí solos a lo largo del tiempo.

En principio, Hayek proporcionaba dos argumentos principales. El 1ro surgió como respuesta directa a una serie de artículos publicados por los economistas ortodoxos y dirigidos a refutar lo que se conoce como el argumento del “cálculo” de Mises.

Esencialmente, estos habían argumentado, en contra de la postura de Mises, que no hacen falta precios proporcionados por el mercado para guiarse, sino que podrían disponerse precios no de mercado anunciados por las autoridades centrales, y tratados por los gestores socialistas.

Asimismo, ocurre con los que tratan los productores en mercados de competencia perfecta de factores y productos.

En respuesta a este argumento, Hayek público tres artículos que se ocupaban específicamente del problema del “cálculo” diagnosticado por Mises. En estos, argumentaba que, aunque fuera posible recoger todos los datos relevantes, el problema del socialismo quedaría sin resolver.

Para Hayek, la cantidad de información necesaria para hacer el resultado al menos comparable con el que proporciona el sistema competitivo; excedería el poder del análisis algebraico (C).

El 2do argumento planteado por Hayek no aparece hasta un par de años después de exponer su argumento original. Acá, refuta también la suposición de que una autoridad planificadora centralizada sería en realidad capaz de recoger todos los datos relevantes.

Para hacerlo, Hayek destacaba la importancia del conocimiento en la sociedad (D). Es enfático en establecer que el conocimiento proporciona los datos a partir de los cuales se inicia el cálculo económico.

Sin embargo, estos datos no pueden ser recogidos por una autoridad planificadora centralizada porque no están disponibles. Estos están en buena parte dispersos en el tiempo y el espacio, es decir, es conocimiento privado que depende de circunstancias particulares.

En virtud de lo anterior, Hayek plantea que el problema real de la sociedad socialista; es que los DATOS a partir de los cuales se iniciaría el cálculo económico, nunca están dados para toda la sociedad en una sola mente que pueda deducir sus implicaciones.

Así, en opinión de Hayek, el problema del socialismo reside fundamentalmente en la ignorancia o falta de conocimiento de la autoridad planificadora central.
