2) American Patriot newspaper (1852) mirrors what many now say about Muslims:

"Disgorging themselves upon us, at the rate of Hundreds of Thousands Every Year! They aim at nothing short of conquest and supremacy over us."

Who were they writing about? Catholics. #StPatricksDay
3) 1852 picture Catholic immigrants to US carrying signs:

"We Are Bound to Carry Out the Pious Intentions of His Holiness the Pope"

"Americans Shant Rule Us!"

Allegiance to strange religion. Refusal to adhere to US law & values. What's now said about Muslims.

#StPatricksDay
4) Immigrants as threats to national "values" (poor foreigners w/strange religion, customs) has been played out over & over throughout history. Those now considered national cornerstones (like US Irish) were once treated just as Muslim immigrants treated today. #StPatricksDay
5) In the bottom right of the picture (in front of the ship) there is a newly-arrived Catholic immigrant beating a poor, innocent "native" with a club. So, immigrants bringing violence and hatred with them. Ring any bells? #StPatricksDay
6) So,when sections of media write smear pieces about Muslims in the US and Europe, let's remember that exactly the same things were written about a (now celebrated) section of US society that has made huge contributions to US cultural and economic life. #StPatricksDay
7) The supreme irony is that many of those who vilify Muslims and immigrants in Europe and the US are the same who pontificate about the superiority of "Western societies," while obviously having learned nothing from the history of those societies. #StPatricksDay
