this amazing panel from Berserk popped up in my facebook memories a few days ago and a few friends who never read the series hit me up to ask about it. so i decided to do a thread on the influences on Kentaro Miura as he wrote and drew his masterpiece of a manga.
Paul Verhoeven's 1985 Flesh And Blood was a major influence on Berserk, and the character of Guts was modeled after Rutger Hauer.
Femto was directly influenced by Brian De Palma's Phantom Of The Paradise
Go Nagai (creator of Devilman, Mazinger Z, Violence Jack) has been cited by Miura as the biggest overall influence on Berserk
there is a lot of Giger influence in Berserk but the clearest example is Conrad who is based off his painting Landscape VII (all the members of the God Hand are to some extent influenced by Giger)
Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind is a direct influence on this sequence
The God Hand's staircase is a homage to MC Escher
Hieronymus Bosch's depictions of hell also show up repeatedly in Berserk
references to Gustav Dore show up multiple times in Berserk
the scandinavian landscapes of Tove Jansson have showed up in later volumes as well
almost forgot but Miura's former collaborator Buronson's Hokuto No Ken (AKA Fist Of The North Star, of 'omae wa mo shinderu' fame) is another huge influence on the character of Guts.
Oh yes, the Godhand were also based off the Cenobites from Hellraiser!!
