alright well, this will be the start of my thread ( and personal experiences and research ) about adhd. disclaimer, i am diagnosed with adhd ( as well as autism which i will also discuss since they are closely related in the psychiatric field )
adhd ( attention deficit hyperactive disorder ), or sometimes known as add ( attention deficit disorder ) is a developmental disorder that effects the "executive functioning" skills of the brain, which include (but are not limited to)-
-attention, concentration, memory, motivation and effort, learning from mistakes, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, organization, and social skills. you dont hear much about any other skills here save for attention and concentration but those are only a part of a whole-
-myriad of skills that we struggle with (or develop much slower than other people). here, i& #39;ll go into the three different types of adhd. first, we have whats categorized as the "hyperactive" type. i feel this is pretty self explanatory, but i will explain anyway.-
-the hyperactive type is the most stereotypical of the bunch, the one that everybody assumes adhd is all about. boundless energy, difficulty with volume, extreme fidgety-ness, no filter, etc.
the next type is "inattentive" (which i am!). the inattentive type isnt any-
the next type is "inattentive" (which i am!). the inattentive type isnt any-
-less "extreme" than hyperactive, the symptoms just show in different ways. inattentive types, in my experience, still fidget and have difficulty with stayin still. however, we tend to "zone out" more and the symptoms present in hyperactive usually translate to us-
-as if we keep all of it inside. our minds run extremely quickly and therefore cannot stay focused on one subject for too long a time. the last type is the combined type, which means you exhibit symptoms of both hyperactive and inattentive types.
like i mentioned earlier, the attention part is only a part of adhd. in my opinion, the disorder should be named somethin different, and recently ive found a name that fits it better. "executive dysfunction disorder", if i recall correctly.
a huge HUGE part of adhd is the inability to start or complete tasks that can be as simple as gettin out of bed or turnin your light on. it is a huge obstacle for us and really really fucks with our ability to function normally in everyday life. this is whats called-
"executive dysfunction". professionally it covers the range of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral difficulties associated with adhd (and some mental illnesses, like depression).
executive dysfunction is not present in everybody with adhd, however, but it is still present in a huge margin of people with it. it impairs "goal-directed behavior" and that ties in with what i said earlier about the inability to start tasks. this also-
-means that we have difficulty with memory and plannin skills which impairs our ability to, again, start and complete tasks (of any caliber).
another big part of adhd is the development of social behaviors. we dont develop these as fast or as "correctly" as non-adhd people do, which is why we& #39;re often characterized as childish or immature
if a lot of these descriptions sound familiar, it& #39;s probably because they are strikingly similar to symptoms of autism. medically, they are considered "sister disorders", and share a majority of symptoms. the difference here is said symptoms will manifest differently-
-in each person. however, this does not make it any easier to tell the difference between the two, even if youre a licensed professional. theyre often diagnosed together (comorbid diagnosis) or misdiagnosed (dx& #39;d with adhd when you really have autism or vice versa)
another thing i want to mention related to the memory thing i mentioned earlier is that alongside terrible memory, a lot of us are /terribly/ forgetful. we get brain farts like all the time. even if its super important, we can forget it. dont test us. its not fun
i& #39;ll probably add more later since, haha, im startin to get distracted, but i hope this has been educational thus far. im tired of seein adhd be misunderstood on such a vast global scale when its really much more than just attention issues
