What's the difference between 'Data Viz' and 'Data Art'? Well, first of all a, a Data Viz is a tool that needs to be readable, and it is usually helping someone(s) accomplish something like making decisions and monitoring conditions of a system.
Data Art does not have the requirement of readability. It might be, but can be more abstract. It also differs in that it is an act of human expression, and the artist herself defines it as art.
A lot of folks call 'beautiful', or unreadable, Data Viz art. I can't say that I agree with this. Art involves intention and an act of expression as art.
On the flip side, Data Art can also be readable. And it can be ugly or disturbing.
Calling poorly designed Data Viz, that is unreadable, Art? Isn't that an insult to art? Isn't it just failing to discuss the failed readability of the Viz, and instead attempting to 'compliment' the beauty of the piece? Perhaps that Viz is more 'Decoration'.
