*** #Yoongi Pre-debut Info Thread***
I'm starting with this beat which is MOST LIKELY but NOT CONFIRMED by him, posted in June 2008 and by a Min Yoongi who used the screenname M.Y.K. #suga #OurFirstLoveYoongi
I don't want to 100% confirm it was Yoongi because there were actually 2 Kim Namjoons making music back in pre-debut times and early k-fans sometimes confused them. I don't want to make the same mistake esp when there's no voice in the audio. But I'd say 70-90% certain its him.
I pulled this video from the YouTube source here, and they pulled it from Jungle Radio, which was one of the main amateur hip hop sites. (Namjoon even mentions it in his Thanks section of the 2 cool 4 Skool album).
Aside from that beat, there's no record of Yoongi on JR or any other hip hop sites until 2010 when he uses the name Gloss. He never leveled up his M.Y.K id on JR so he probably didn't use it much. It's possible he used some other name between MYK and Gloss but there's no record.
In May 2010 he posted a song he produced for D-Town on Pann. The song was for a festival honoring the Gwangju Uprising called 518-062. Nakshun, the leader of D-Town, was the rapper.
In August 2010 he was part of the second D-town concert "D-Town Vol 2" at a club called Live in-D.
As part of the advertisement for the concert, D-Town made a promotional video for the concert which includes a video of Yoongi performing, but no audio. (Yoongi appears at 0:43) https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLBS0t_oriQOHuORmmZNqbjuAfCMZUVKiT&time_continue=1&v=GZ5bsuLSM8Q
In October 2010 he posted a group song with D-Town members Lucid P. and The Smile. Unfortunately the audio is missing (Something that's become an annoying pattern at this point) but the lyrics survived.
The song is called "인생의 진리지" which roughly translates as "The Truth of Life" I translated Yoongi's part below, but there's a lot of Satoori in it which made it a bit more difficult.
Around the same time as the song above, Yoongi started the Hit It audition process which had several rounds. He had to rap on 1 of 4 different beats provided by Big Hit. Yoongi used the beat from "Seventeen" which was one of the 2 Namjoon rapped on.
After that, the videos were uploaded and voted on online on a site called Love Beat. Based on voting and a group of judges from Big Hit three finalists were picked to go on to the finals. Yoongi placed 1st in this semi-final.
On October 24th, 2010 Yoongi attended the Hit It Audition Finals held at the NB2 club in Hongdae. They held a tournament style rap battle and the then current members of BTS (Namjoon, Supreme Boi, Iron) also performed.
Yoongi defeated all his opponents until the final round when he went up against Choi Ikje (also known as i11evn). Although only first place was guaranteed a spot in BTS, they were impressed with yoongi's production skills and invited him to join as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=FdW0M0fRnc4
Yoongi later rerecorded his raps against i11evn which were named Swagger and Diss.
The ending of "Diss" was changed from his live performance to include the joking lines "Ah..
Wait, but I lost
(sigh)… Damn!"
(It had previously ended with him saying that it was obvious that he won)
A little before this time, Yoongi produced a beat for the underground rapper Reflow who sought him out as "the beatmaker from D-Town." The song was called "Who am I" and was released on Reflows mixtape in Oct 2011. Reflow also did a remix of it with Basick
After joining Big Hit, yoongi seems to have had a low profile in the underground scene. As far as I know he didn't perform in any concerts or release any more music. His next appearance is in Aug 2011 when he, Joon, and Hobi started promoting Satoori Rap.
In late 2012, Bts opened their official twitter and blog pages where Yoongi uploaded all kinds of content. And of course on June 13th 2013 BTS officially debuted with No More Dream
