a bkdk au where bakugou is an heir to a business empire. he’s raised to believe he is better than everyone else and that servants should kiss the ground he walks upon. everyone’s either scared of him or treats him like a child. well, everyone except one of the maids’ son; izuku.
his father taught him friendship wasnt necessary. but when katsuki breaks his toy boat while playing in the pond and izuku makes him a new one out of paper, nimble hands folding the edges, katsuki thinks maybe his father just hasn’t met the right friend yet. katsuki knows he has.
“young master is that all you need?”

“i told you to stop calling me that, nerd.”

“o-oh right. im sorry young ma— i mean, i can call you kacchan then?”

katsuki’s heart skips a beat at that.

“whatever. just don’t call me your master. that’s gross.”
they grow up together. katsuki teaches izuku what he learns from his homeschooling so that they learned together. katsuki even sneaks out some of the lavish stews&bread that they serve in his house so that he could share a meal with izuku at their favorite place in the gardens.
“kacchan if you had one wish, what would you wish for?” izuku asks once.

“hmm i dont know. i have everything i want.” katsuki says, but his mind drifts to izuku being by his side. always. that’s what he would wish for. the certainty.

“of course,” izuku tries to hide his tears.
“of course kacchan wouldn’t need to make a wish.” izuku tries to laugh, lips trembling. “i-i would wish for my mother to have a life out of being a servant. i dont want her to suffer anymore.”

katsuki reaches out slowly to wipe at izuku’s tears. there’s a pain in his chest.
without thinking, katsuki blurts out:

“y-your happiness.”

“huh?”

“i would wish that you’d always be happy, ‘zuku.”

izuku laughs, real this time, and katsuki’s young and in love brain thinks that must be how sunshine sounds like.

“i’m always happy when i’m with you, kacchan.”
but when they turn 18 and katsuki needs to go abroad for college, izuku isn’t happy. no, he’s devastated.

on their last night, katsuki holds izuku in his arms as the smaller boy racks with sobs. when the worst subsides, izuku speaks.

“promise me you’ll come back.”
izuku’s green eyes stare determinedly into katsuki’s red ones.

he could never say no to those eyes.

“i promise that even if i had to walk my way back to you, i would” katsuki’s eyes burn.

there’s a split second of hesitation and then he leans in.

they share their first kiss.
everything is warm. izuku’s tears roll down katsuki’s cheek but the blond still keeps him close.

they pull away, breathless and longing for more.

but they can’t. so instead, they fall asleep in each other’s arms.

katsuki is gone in the morning.
izuku wakes to an empty bed, his heart falling. the air still smells like kacchan, sandalwood with a hint of maple, as if he was still there.

tears well in his eyes but he forces them down. he cant be weak now.

izuku decides then, he’ll wait for katsuki for as long as it takes.
the years pass by slow, almost agonizing.

izuku stays in the bakugou estate even if he’s sick of the housework.

besides, if he didn’t, he wouldn’t get the letters katsuki sent him.

the letters come in frequently at first, full of love and longing. izuku treasures each one.
keeps it at his bedside to read again at night. he writes back as much as he can. tells kacchan that he’s learned how to drive the family car now. tells kacchan that he doesn’t cry as much anymore. tells kacchan that he was promoted to be an advisor. tells kacchan he misses him.
but then, two years in, the letters abruptly stop. izuku tries to write another letter to katsuki but it’s left unanswered.

he isn’t dead. the estate would be mourning if he was, izuku thinks.

another two years pass by. three.

then, katsuki comes home with a girl in his arms.
izuku hears about the young master coming home and he doesn’t want to get excited but he is.

he finishes all the paperwork he has to do for the day as quickly as he can. unable to wait one second where he isn’t holding katsuki’s hand.

until, he sees someone already holding it.
izuku feels as if the world is spinning. he sees katsuki take off his jacket and hands it to the girl. says something to her ear that makes the girl laugh. izuku feels sick at his stomach. he leaves before katsuki can see him. he hides in his room, tears threatening to spill.
he can’t hide when the katsuki’s father arranges a grand dinner to celebrate his son’s return, though. so izuku wipes at the tears yet to fall, puts on his best suit, the one he gained from katsuki’s father trusting him, and does his best to swallow down his feelings.
the banquet’s amazing. yet katsuki feels somewhat empty. he shakes his head, not now. he needs to move on. instead, he grips his lover’s hand tighter, goes to clink glasses with her when suddenly, he sees a familiar freckled face.

katsuki’s glass breaks on the marble floor.
katsuki’s feet move on their own volition. it takes him 2 seconds until he’s infront of the green boy.

“izuku?” he grips him by the arms.

“kac—katsuki.” izuku’s eyeing the ring that wraps around katsuki’s finger. “congratulations on your engagement.”

katsuki is out of words.
“you must be izuku? ‘tsu told me all about you.” the girl arrives, links arms with katsuki. “im ochako.”

izuku already knows he cant hate her. not when shes smiling, not when she probably loves him with her whole being.

“congratulations, soon to be mrs. bakugo.” he leaves.
he leaves before all the guests hear his heart breaking in his chest. leaves before the news that katsuki’s getting married in a week’s time sinks in. hed heard the gossip when he was on his way to the dining room but he didnt believe it. he had to see it for himself. and he did.
katsuki feels like his heart is ripping in two. he unclasps himself from ocha and heads after izuku.

but his father stands in his way.

“katsuki what are you doing?”

“you told me izuku wasn’t here anymore. you told me he hated me.” katsuki spits, his tone dangerous. “you lied.”
izuku’s ready to cry when he sees the pile of envelopes on his bed.

it’s their letters. his and katsuki’s. all unopened, unread. katsuki never stopped writing to him. but how—

katsuki’s father. of course.

izuku finally understands. it doesn’t make the pain easier to bear.
what was izuku thinking?

that katsuki would just go and marry a servant’s son? and his father to let him? did he think it was better for katsuki to just leave his life of luxury to go be with izuku who has nothing?

he takes a deep breath. no, he didn’t want that for katsuki.
so he makes his way back to the banquet. but the sight of both the senior and the heir of the bakugou estate stops him in his tracks.

“i never lied, katsuki.” katsuki’s father says. “izuku told me himself that he was done with whatever was going on between the two of you.”
“that’s impossible—

“i just wanted to make it easier for him to break it to you,” his father continues. “he stopped sending letters didn’t he?”

“no, what did you do? my izuk—

“it’s true, katsuki.” izuku says, behind them. “i don’t want anything to do with you.”
red eyes meet green. one’s surprised, the other determined to not let the pain seep through.

katsuki takes a step back as if punched. he can’t breathe.

“‘zuku,” the old nickname makes its way on his tongue. “tell me you’re lying. tell me you still want this.”

“i dont.”
katsuki rushes to hold izuku’s face in his hands, his throat burning.

“look me in the eye and tell me you don’t love me!” katsuki screams.

izuku stares him down. he could never make katsuki suffer the life he had to live through. he wouldn’t.

“i don’t love you, young master.”
katsuki’s heart drops to his feet. izuku turns to leave but katsuki’s stubborn and he cant let him, no, he won’t let him leave.

“i—izuku wait, just, wait,” katsuki stutters like he never has before, desperate and grasping at straws. “be my best man. please. for old time’s sake.”
izuku’s facade falters at that. his resolve breaks and his tears dare to fall. good thing he isn’t facing katsuki.

“why?” he bites.

“you’ll always be my best friend, ‘zuku. just give me this one last thing, please. i won’t ask for anything more.”

a pause. a sigh.

“alright.”
a soft thank you is what he last hears from katsuki before he goes. he doesn’t see katsuki crumple to the ground once he’s gone. doesn’t hear katsuki cry.

and none of them notice how ochako watched everything.

it is only when he’s finally alone, does izuku let himself break.
izuku gets up early to get his suit fitted, and he thinks fate hates him when ochako comes and fits her wedding dress right. in. front. of. him.

the maids guffaw at the dress, and izuku can’t help but love it too. it’s beautiful. she’s beautiful.

katsuki’s lucky. she’s lucky.
“izuku, why are you crying?”

izuku’s eyes grow wide as he feels the wetness on his cheek. he hadn’t noticed.

“i—i’m just so happy for you, ochako-san.” izuku musters a smile. “katsuki’s lucky to have you.”

ochako notices the smile doesn’t meet his eyes.
“no, i’m lucky to have him,” ochako says matter-of-factly.

izuku feels his throat burn. she’s speaking as if she knows, knows that she’s rubbing it on his face that she has the one person he could never have, but her voice is so sincere that izuku can’t be mad.

so he just nods.
ochako doesn’t miss the way izuku’s knees shake when he walks away. doesn’t miss the tiniest sob that comes out of his chest.

her chest hurts too. she wants to make things right, despite what her heart wants.

she tells the maids to find another dress. not this one, she thinks.
it’s two days before the wedding. and the couple spends one of their last nights as fiancés together by drinking by the balcony.

it’s all fun and games until katsuki utters a silly remark.

“who would’ve thought i would end up with another spoiled rich person, huh?”
ocha seems surprised at first, then the hurt settles in.

“im not spoiled.” she says, defensive.

“oh yeah? tell me one thing you have right now that isnt a product of your parents’ money.” katsuki laughs. her cheeks redden in shame.

“that’s not fair.” ocha says. “i have you.”
“life’s unfair, baby.” katsuki laughs again only now it’s bitter. “you dont always get what you want.”

there’s a silence. and then

“this isnt what you want?”

katsuki sobers up too quick, goes to speak but—

“why are we getting married then?” ocha leaves before he can respond.
katsuki stays in the balcony, alone. until a sleepy izuku stumbles upon him.

“trouble in paradise?” izuku offers. katsuki just grunts an affirmative.

izuku knows he should just let the blond be and stay away until the wedding. but katsuki has other plans.

“we need to talk.”
they stand against the railings, beer bottles scattered about.

“what made you stop loving me?” katsuki sounds so vulnerable.

“hm, i guess i realized i should stop chasing fairytales.”

“but i promised you—

“but you broke your promise.” izuku eyes katsuki’s engagement ring.
katsuki’s eyes narrow.

“because you stopped writing back. because my father told me you wanted nothing to do with me. bec—

“i never stopped writing, kacchan!” izuku shouts.

“bullshit. you—

“i know you didnt stop writing too. i just—never got to read them.”

everything clicks.
“the fucking old geezer—

he intends to go & punch his father’s face but izuku holds him back.

“dont be stupid! what are you going to do? fight with your father? call off your marriage? dont you dare hurt ochako! havent you hurt me enough?”

katsuki sees pain filled green eyes.
“dont you see, kacchan? we were never meant to be.” izuku laughs but it’s hollow. “the prince could never marry the poor servant.”

“we made fucking promises–

“we were young. we thought life would be kinder.” katsuki doesnt do anything but watch izuku speak. “we were wrong.”
“you cant choose me. your father will disown you if you do.”

katsuki falls back onto a chair, exhausted.

“so thats it? you’re giving up?” he spits at izuku.

“you gave up a long time ago.”

“that’s fucking uncalled for.”

“it’s the truth.” izuku stands. “goodnight, katsuki.”
the next day, the estate is busy with the dress rehearsals of the wedding. this meant that everyone participating would have to have breakfast together.

izuku sits directly across the couple.

“morning, izuku.” ocha greets. “didn’t sleep well?”

izuku almost chokes on his food.
but he sees the bags under ocha’s eyes, too. notices how katsuki’s watching them both.

“i think you were the one who had trouble sleeping last night, ochako-san.” izuku says truthfully.

“i wasn’t the one poking around where he wasn’t supposed to, though.”

izuku’s ears ring.
katsuki’s eyes are trained on her, lightning-quick. ocha didnt mean to say it like that.

“izuku, i didnt mean—

izuku stands.

“he’s all yours, ochako-san.” izuku’s voice is cold, empty.

izuku leaves but katsuki is already on his feet. ocha finds her suspicions to be correct.
“where do you think you’re going? go back to your bride.” his father calls.

“i know what you fucking did,” katsuki’s shouts. “you ruined our lives—

“but you believed me didn’t you? why is that?”

katsuki’s silent.

“is it because you couldn’t bear to leave all this luxury?”
“fuck no! i—i was afraid.” katsuki doesn’t know what to say.

“you can pretend all you want but this wealth is all you’ve ever known. are you going to throw away all of this for some measly boy?”

“don’t fucking talk about him like that.”

“don’t be stupid, katsuki. let him go.”
and katsuki caves to his father’s words. he sinks to his knees on the marble floor.

what is he going to do?

after awhile, ocha arrives. soft skin and gentle hands embrace katsuki.

“you knew we weren’t just friends,” katsuki whispers to her hair. “why didnt you say something?”
“last night,” ochako smiles bitterly. “you didnt even try to run after me.”

katsuki feels his throat close up.

“but you would chase after izuku anywhere, huh?” ochako laughs but tears are streaming down her cheeks. “i never stood a chance.”

“im sorry,” is all katsuki can say.
“it’s fine.” she says although it isn’t. “i saw the way you look at him, as if he put the moon and stars in the sky. i know he had already won before i could even think of competing.”

“ocha—

“the wedding’s off, katsuki.” she places a kiss on katsuki’s cheek. “go after him.”
i’ll be updating and most probably finishing this tomorrow if anyone is wondering! will our boys live happily ever after? we’ll see ヾ(๑╹◡╹)ノ"
izuku doesnt know where he’s going until he sees the field of lavender flowers before him. he’s at their favorite spot in the gardens.

who wouldve thought everything would end at the same place where it started? izuku laughs to himself while clutching the pain in his chest.
his knees melt into the grass. kacchan’s going to marry someone else! what’s left to care about?

izuku was stupid. so stupid. the worst part is, that he hadn’t even gotten the chance to tell kacchan that he loved him. of course, he had to mess up that part too.
izuku can never do anything right, can he?

𝘪 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘬𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯.

it would’ve been so easy, izuku thinks.

“i love you too, you know?” a voice says behind him.

izuku freezes. he hadn’t meant to say it out loud. he turns to see the blond walking towards him.
izuku looks at katsuki like he’s grown another head as the red-eyed boy takes a seat on the grass in front of him.

in this position, they could pretend that theyre the same boys they were all those years ago.

“i’ve missed this.” katsuki starts. “i’ve missed you, nerd.”
he reaches out but izuku flinches away.

“why are you here?” izuku says, voice daring to crack. “dont you have a wedding to rehearse?”

“there’s no wedding. ochako called it off.”

“ha?” izuku makes a sound thats both a yelp and a rejoice. he’s blushing. “what about your father?”
“who fucking cares about him?” he grins. “im choosing you, dumbass.”

izuku’s completely red now. “what? kacchan, are you stupid? why would you choose me over all this?” he gestures to the estate.

“because youre the only one i want, stupid.” katsuki says. “you always have been.”
“zuku do you understand now?” izuku can feel katsuki’s breath—how did he get this close?

red eyes meet green, then travel down to survey izuku’s lips.

“understand what?” izuku trembles.

“that ill choose you over and over again if i have to. in this life and all the next ones.”
tears well up in izuku’s eyes.

“oi,” katsuki warns. “don’t you cry on me now—

he’s cut off by izuku’s lips on his own.

the kiss is filled with longing and admiration and love. katsuki kisses back, savors this warmth he’s missed.

izuku can feel the smile against his lips.
so the two boys fall in love, and fall in love again, in the same place in which they started. the field of lavender in the gardens.

they spend the rest of the day kissing under the sun.

and at night, they go to speak to the head of the house. they choose to stand their ground.
and bakugou senior sees the determination in his son’s eyes. he takes a glance at the picture of his wife he’d kept.

he won’t lose his son too. he sighs and gives up the estate.

“why?” katsuki asks.

“the glint in your eyes was the same one i had when i fought for your mother.”
katsuki’s surprised at that. his father never talked about his mother before. he never met her.

“but my father was cruel,” the old man breaks out into a sad smile. “he’d never let me marry a mere waitress.”

katsuki stares.

“so, i want you to be happy.”
“i want you to be with your true love.”

a lone tear slides down katsuki’s cheek.

“tha—

“thank you so much!” izuku exclaims.

the old man pats izuku’s shoulder.

“take care of him for me, yeah?” he points to katsuki. “i know he can be insufferable.”

izuku laughs. “of course!”
“IM the one taking care of YOU, dumbass!” katsuki shouts.

izuku giggles as he runs to avoid katsuki’s embraces. inevitably letting katsuki catch him in the end.

the two boys spend the night sharing stories and re-familiarizing each other’s lives and bodies.
{epilogue.}

“i love you, kacchan.” izuku says, wrapped in the blond’s arms.

“i love you too, you big baby.” katsuki whispers to izuku’s forehead. two rings on separate hands glint in the moonlight.

they stay in the bakugou estate. they stay in each other’s arms.
{end.}
