As a clinical counsellor, I have the privilege of walking alongside my clients and witnessing their journeys of healing. It isn’t always an easy process, and there’s still a lot of stigma around the topic of #mentalhealth.

Thankfully, times are changing. There are now movements like #BellLetsTalk & the discussion of #mentalhealth is starting to become more commonplace. In spite of this though, resources are still limited & therapy is expensive.

Research has shown that the theoretical orientation and approach that is used in therapy is not what matters most in change and healing, and instead, what is important is the relationship between the counsellor and client.

In order for change to occur, there needs to be trust and safety built between the counsellor and client. This takes time, effort, and again, is not always, if ever, an easy, accessible, or affordable process for all.

Which leads me to my next point, the incredible phenomenon that has created a community and a sense of healing, all stemming from the show, #WynonnaEarp , produced by @SYFY, based off of a comic book series from @IDWPublishing.

I don’t quite know how to describe it, but, somehow, within the #WynonnaEarp fandom, something magical happened amidst the tweets & threads. Things that I normally only see in individual and group therapy, I got to witness in the fandom.

I won’t lie, it was actually a bit strange to see the trust and safety grow between #Earpers , as they confided in and then supported one another, non-judgementally and compassionately.

It was strange as it was out of the norm & yet, it was amazing, as it was within this, that I saw healing.

I found myself witnessing healing as #Earpers shared how they related to the characters & storylines portrayed on #WynonnaEarp .

I found myself witnessing healing as the cast and crew modelled, normalized, and encouraged fans to have more open conversations about #mentalhealth.

I found myself witnessing healing as #Earpers found a sense of belongingness and community with one another.

It was absolutely incredible to see the fandom turn into a famdom — a family within a fandom.

What was even more incredible was the fact that #Earpers knew that their famdom was not a substitute for professional support.

People were still encouraged to connect with their doctors and go see a counsellor.

This was cool to witness. Really, really cool. I knew and still know in my heart that the #Earper community is something special, something to be cherished.

... and then, something unexpected happened. I found myself witnessing shock, fear, horror, and more as the fate of #WynonnaEarp was known to be uncertain.

Almost immediately, #Earpers rallied and began to speak out to @IDWPublishing & @SYFY, to #FightForWynonna , and to share their stories and experiences relating to #WynonnaEarp .
