Not all trans people have Always Known™

Not all trans people experience dysphoria

Not all trans people hate their bodies

Not all trans people want to medically transition
For a long time, this narrative kept me from being able to embrace my own gender identity.

I've always felt that something wasn't right. But because my story didn't fit into the Trans Narrative™ I dismissed those feelings and tried to ignore them.
This is the danger of a single narrative.

Especially when that narrative is perpetuated by mostly cisgender people and cis-led media outlets.
When I started to dig around and talk to other trans people about their journeys, I found a wealth of stories that looked like mine.

Stories that focused on gender EUPHORIA, not dysphoria. Stories about not hating your body, but also knowing you'd be happier with something else
The truth about the Trans Narrative™ is it serves the purpose of making Cis people feel

1) safe - they deffo couldn't be trans too
2) like trans and nonbinary identities are a rare medical affliction, rather than that our received western ideas of gender are inherently flawed.
Even within the trans community, there exists a policing of who counts as "trans enough".

The reality is that this kind of policing is a symptom of the desire to assimilate into cisnormativity, rather than challenge cisnormativity itself.
(Kinda like how certain gays try their best to fit into heteronormative society, rather than challenge heteronormativity as a structure that flattens and crushes the richness of human sexuality and diversity)
Anyway.

I'll post links to some of the resources and stories that helped me realise that you dont need to fit the Trans Narrative™ to be legitimately trans - just in case they help someone else.
1) this vid on dysphoria vs euphoria
(It talks about how sometimes dysphoria only arises once you've finally felt euphoria, and says these words at 16:30)
Some trans ppl have the normative experience. But not all. Maybe not even most.

There are so many more articles and stories out there about other experiences and journeys too. These are just for starters.

Xxx
