Gonna make my way through the Bond films again in order. I expect this thread to be interesting, some of these I’ve not watched in years, so I’m excited to revisit some and of course all the old favourites. Let’s go!
DR. NO:
My opinion never really changes on this one. It’s basic, enjoyable bond that immediately establishes what the tone of at least the Connery era is going to be like. It’s nothing special, but full of iconic moments, entertaining set pieces and it’s an enjoyable start.
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE: Bigger, better and more refined than Dr. No. I used to really not like this one when I was younger, now I’m older I can appreciate just how good it is. It feels like the filmmakers looked at Dr. No and refined every element.
GOLDFINGER: Pure, unfiltered, quintessential James Bond. It’s obvious why this is arguably the most iconic Bond of all. It still holds up as a fun, engaging and memorable spy thriller with proper boo hiss villains. I adore this film, and it’ll always be in my favs. Best Connery.
THUNDERBALL: Oh boy here’s where the unpopular opinions come in. I kinda can’t stand this one. It’s a boring, poorly edited, over-complicated slog of a movie that I can’t believe gets so much love. Only real saving grace is Connery, I had hoped to love it on this watch, but nah.
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE: For the most part, this is a fun adventure with James Bond. Lovely locations and an iconic villain make this one a good watch, but it’s a shame Connery’s performance is so phoned in, a far cry from how great he was in Goldfinger...
ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE:
One of my favourites. Awesome action, superbly directed, a genuinely engaging and well developed love story, a Bond who by the end you can really care about. A wonderful slice of ‘60s cinema. Adore this one.
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER:
Uggghh this film. Such a disappointment. Connery’s better here than he was in YOLT, but he’s still not nearly as good as he was in the first 4 films. After OHMSS this is just a cheap, sleazy mess. They were clearly just trying to replicate GF’s success.
LIVE AND LET DIE:
Though held back by some serious issues, Roger Moore’s first outing as Bond is a fun, energetic and bouncy relaunch for the series.
It’s a bit racially insensitive now, but if I pointed out every problematic element in the Bond series I’d be here all day...
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN (1974):

Back to DAF territory, with a cheap, tacky adventure. They’ve still not figured out how to write Moore’s Bond, & lots of it just feels very off & I’m not quite sure why

Still, Lee’s awesome & the score is cool, but not one of the best at all
Also yeah I’m still doing this marathon

The Moore era is a bit of a struggle for me at points, hence the long gaps between films 😂
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1977)
The kick up the arse the franchise desperately needed. It’s a great flick, and one of my favourites in the series. It feels bigger, much more confident and the writers have finally figured out what to do with Moore’s Bond. Great stuff.
MOONRAKER (1979)
Used to dislike this, honestly quite enjoyed it this time. It’s so cartoony, so silly but it’s all just a bit of fun. It is quite slow and meandering at parts and I don’t return to it often, but I was really pleasantly surprised with this.
It’s not amazing or anything, and it’s heavily flawed. But I don’t class this as one of the weakest of the series anymore, and it’s far from the low point many say it is. It’s a helluva lot more fun that DAF or MWTGG. Some genuinely beautiful direction and cinematography too.
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (1981):
Back to basics with a pretty enjoyable adventure. Easily the most serious of the Moore flicks, and I admire what it tried to do in terms of Melina’s character and the revenge theme, even if it isn’t always successful.

I dig the score too.
OCTOPUSSY (1983)

For as batshit mental as this one gets, I find that there are long stretches where it’s just very dull.
Idk it’s never clicked with me really. There’s fun to be had of course but it’s probably the Bond film I’ve watched the least
A VIEW TO A KILL (1985)

Pretty crap tbh. Roger Moore looks about 90 and the whole thing feels very tired and weak. Not as bad as it’s often made out to be but Jesus it ain’t good folks.
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS (1987)
Has the potential to be great, but it has a bit of an identity crisis on its hands and is a bit bland imo. An awesome new Bond in Timothy Dalton and great music, but held back by the staleness of using the same creative team as the latter Moore films
Not bad in all fairness to it, but Dalton’s much more serious take on the character needed a film which suited him better I think. As it is it can’t seem to pick a tone and it doesn’t feel like a complete departure from the Moore era bar a few more intense moments.
LICENSE TO KILL (1989)
Now this is a film which suits Dalton’s Bond well. One of my favourite Bond films and a nice change of pace. It’s a dark, brutal action thriller which feels more akin to Die Hard than Bond, but I actually really dig that.
Very different, but damn it’s cool
Also, Pam Bouvier is awesome and she should’ve come back
GOLDENEYE (1995)
My favourite Bond makes his debut in my favourite Bond film! Proves that the character of Bond is still relevant in a post-cold war world and is just an incredibly exciting and inventive action film.
Really awesome villains, my fav Bond girl. I just love it.
I genuinely love how the film addresses Bond’s sexism and misogyny and really shows him trying to adjust after the Cold War. Having Moneypenny, M and Natalya call him out on it is really interesting. The latter kicks ass too, and it’s cool to see Bond being challenged like that.
It’s absolutely nuts how much can change in 6 years. It feels so different to Licence to Kill in every way and it’s wonderful to see the franchise attempt to evolve and be a little more self-aware whilst still keeping the original flavour.

God I love GoldenEye
TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997)
So much fun! This is one I often go for if I just wanna sit down and relax with a Bond flick so it’s one I know quite well. I like the villain, the action, Brosnan is even better here than in GoldenEye. It’s great stuff all round.
THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999)
I really wish I enjoyed this as much as a lot of people do. I really love so many of the ideas and how it does something unique with the formula. By all logic I should love this, but unfortunately it’s never clicked with me in the way I want it to
There are long sections which I find really quite dull, and the whole thing doesn’t seem to grab me like it should.

Still, it’s got my fav pre-title sequence, I love the theme, I love Elektra and everything they do with her and it’s probably my favourite Brosnan performance.
It’s quite frustrating because there’s genuinely so much about the film I adore, it just doesn’t quite work as a whole piece for me.
DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002)
Every time I think of this I’m like “Oh it’s alright, not good but a bit of fun” and then I watch it again and no it’s genuinely bad
It’s just a very bizarre and awkward film that doesn’t hold together at all
Brosnan deserved a better send off than this
CASINO ROYALE (2006):

lol remember this thread where I was trying to be really for No Time To Die in APRIL

heh

Anyways, everyone knows Casino Royale is a friggin gem. One of the very best Bond films out there, a perfect reboot for the series. So well directed.
