Thread for my fellow Partridge / TV comedy nerds. So, browsing eBay the other day, I caught the lesser-spotted original UK DVD release of I& #39;m Alan Partridge Series 1 going for next to nowt. It was released in October 2001, however the BBC withdrew it from sale in early 2002...
The Joni Mitchell song "Big Yellow Taxi" - infamously critiqued by Alan at the very beginning of the series - hadn& #39;t been cleared for use, so it was duly silenced for the 2002 re-release. But THAT& #39;S NOT THE ONLY DIFFERENCE...
Not having read or heard of any other cuts or music subsitutions, I expected the rest to be identical on both DVD versions. And they are... except at the very end. (Brace yourselves, we& #39;re heading into the realms of anal retentiveness.)
THE ENDCAPS DON& #39;T MATCH https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😼" title="Face with open mouth" aria-label="Emoji: Face with open mouth">
Why don& #39;t they match?
In the words of Alan, "What the hell& #39;s going on?" https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đŸ€”" title="Thinking face" aria-label="Emoji: Thinking face">
One other thing I did notice whilst checking the endcaps - so don& #39;t worry, it wasn& #39;t A COMPLETE WASTE OF MY TIME - was the difference in colour between the two releases, probably most noticeable in this clip. The 2001 release generally looks warmer, to my eyes anyway.
But I& #39;m straying from the point. Here we go, To Kill A Mocking Alan, same again. Surely someone out there can solve this strange mystery?
Anyway, whilst you& #39;re here, here& #39;s the main DVD menu of the original release. Clearly not a patch on choosing YES for Bangkok Chick Boys and having the available navigation options circle Alan& #39;s gyrating body. (Tenner says that& #39;s the first time anyone& #39;s ever tweeted that.)
Really makes you appreciate the effort that was put into the subsequent DVD release.
Anyway, that& #39;s it, but here& #39;s the endcap of Towering Alan for completeness. They& #39;re ALMOST identical, but not quite. AAAAAAAAAAH. If you enjoyed this thread, please consider psychiatric help.
