It’s perturbing to witness the perpetual victimisation of Osaka by the tennis media and establishment as a result of the US Open incident, when Serena did not get that same treatment when she was booed and racially abused by a white crowd of thousands for an entire match at IW’s.
It’s very easy to paint these half Japanese player as the victim of a big, aggressive, dark-skinned black bully. The fact is, that incident has done more for Osaka’s palatability to white audiences than a singular grand slam win ever could.

That brings up another issue...
Osaka will undoubtedly be rewarded with endless endorsements, and will be the most endorsed female athlete in the world. Many will use this to diminish Serena’s struggle throughout her career to get endorsements due to her skin colour, unlike her white counterpart, Sharapova.
Meanwhile, Osaka will never face the barriers that Serena and Venus have had to face throughout their careers. I’m old enough to remember that the reason Hawk Eye exists is because Serena was robbed with outrageous line calls in her 2004 US Open match against Capriati.
Over the next decade, we will witness the constant adulation of Osaka, partly because she’s half Japanese, so is not seen as threatening or as intimidating as Serena. But mostly because Serena smashed down those hurdles so the next person, like Osaka, would not have to.
It would be nice if Osaka, a proclaimed stan of Serena Williams, came to understand all of this and came to her defence when the media try to exacerbate this falsified imagery of her being a victim at the hands of this angry, dark-skinned black woman.
Let me make this clear: This is NOT an attack on Osaka. It’s an attack on the tennis establishment in which she resides. She is a talented player. However, make no mistake, she only gets to walk so fruitfully and with such ease because Serena already treaded that path for her.
