GOOD morning swifties!!!! i have been thinking lately about the problem w activism within the taylor fandom and how it more often than not seems performative rather than born out of a genuine desire to improve the world and i think i have figured out why it seems that way
it is because when social justice is being discussed in this fandom, 95% of the time it is focused on cancelling people (or at the very least calling them out) as opposed to doing literally anything else that would be more productive and likely to inspire change
idek where 2 begin w/ examples of this. there have been days when some random account has been exposed for being a republican and then my tl for the next few hours is just 'UNFOLLOW ME IF YOU'RE A REPUBLICAN!!!'. there's the obsession w/ joseph kahn. the thing w/ joe yesterday
the whole 'if any of my mutuals r still following this account who said this problematic thing i'm going to block u immediately'. just so much focus on what other people are doing wrong in what seems like an attempt to show everyone else that we're not like the people who r wrong
i can’t remember the last time the fandom as a whole actually put our energy into doing something active politically instead of just using our politics as a weapon against people we don’t like or a badge of honour to show everyone how enlightened we are
it all comes across as very disingenuous and performative and self serving and this is definitely not about any one particular person, it's a fandom-wide thing. i don't think it's on purpose. and it doesn't mean that ppl who say stupid shit shouldn't be called out sometimes
it also doesn't mean that people don't genuinely care about these issues. but i just hope that maybe this year we will stop focusing so MUCH on what other people are doing wrong and instead focus on ourselves and how we can improve the world with the tools we have. thx 4 readin
