For me, cartoons played a huge part in forming my comics fandom, growing up in a golden age of cartoons like Batman: TAS, X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk and of course: The Fantastic Four. The toy line fueling cartoons were where I got my first taste of the FF.
Eventually, a trip to Grand Union (a now defunct grocery chain in NJ where I would go food shopping with my mom) found me staring a Jim-Lee-drawn Thing in the face. This issue had the Inhumans, opened with a teaser of Galactus & ended with a Dr. Doom teaser. All CLASSIC FF stuff.
I was always a Spidey guy, first & foremost, but the FF always stood as a beacon of top-tier heroism with the flair of humanity. When they showed up in the 90s Spider-Man cartoon I was blown away at the connectivity/continuity in shows. Something that it took note of from comics.
There was something so unique about this costume design that really stood out to me, along with the separation in the “4” design. Once the mayhem of Heroes Reunited and WWIII was over, the wave of Heroes Return began, which gave me the perfect jump on point to classic FF stories.
And.
Here.
We.
Go.
LOOK at that Alan Davis Cover!
Such a beautiful composition of the team, ready to face the challenges as big as the universe could throw at them and as small as the home life of the Baxter building could lob their way. Great mix of big/small, classic/new.

By this point, I began getting Marvel subscriptions for the 4 books I was dedicated to, one of which being Fantastic Four! Over the years, creative teams shifted, concepts changed, but through it all they were still the classic FF filled with heart and cosmic adventures.
And then came the first time I saw a consistent run with a creative team that would be hard to beat: Mark & Mike stepped in and hit the ground running...with a 9 cent comic! If memory serves, I bought multiple copies & gave them out to friends in hopes to get them hooked like me.
Then, for the first time ever in my time reading, I was lucky enough to have TWO ongoing FF series with Marvel Knights 4! What a time! I didn’t think we’d ever get another period like that again, until...
The Hickman Era. Absolutely one of my favorite runs with the family. The incorporation of Peter as part of the FF team, holding the importance of his relationship with the family so high. DOOM being a part of the Future Foundation as well. Such a beautifully crafted epic.
It was at this point I finally got another tattoo: The Classic “4” logo right over my heart. The Fantastic Four stand for family, by blood, by friendship, by kinship, family is what matters most to keeping humanity sane. Love, respect, and care for one another.
But then...they returned.
Like they always do.
Like a family, the Fantastic Four will always be there when they’re needed.
Always.
