i'm so fucking sick of for fans by fans and nobody fucking cares
people got so angry about the beyond good and evil 2 thing and the good omens amazon thing but ffbf has been skating by on getting free/cheap art for years and like. literally nobody has given a shit
and the reason for that is because IT'S PROPPED UP BY INDIES WHO ARE BIG ENOUGH TO PROFIT OFF IT TOO
so nobody's calling attention to it because the people who WOULD call attention to it are getting benefits from it
ugh ugh ugh

indies such as:
@andrewhussie, @dansalvato, @btflglitch, @Coffee_Stain, @YachtClubGames, @DPadStudio, @monomipark, and others who should REALLY KNOW BETTER than to exploit cheap/free art just for profit
also all the major studios and game publishers who also use their services

if you use ffbf, you're complicit in the exploitation of cheap/free art labor for profit. if you buy stuff from their site, no matter how cool it is or how much you like it, you're complicit in it. if you submit stuff to their site, you're allowing yourself to be exploited
anyway happy new year ffbf is fucking garbage
i forgot to actually say why but basically ffbf collects tons of free art in contests that they don't compensate for, and when they pick people with the promise of pay they don't get paid that much
it's a lot to go into but basically read https://www.nospec.com/

the funny thing is, ffbf actually could work really well!!! i'm serious about this. it's got a lot going for it.
-functioning, well designed store front
-many high-profile and well known IPs driving traffic
-infrastructure to pay many diverse artists
but it's done so wrong

instead of having contests, what they should do is open up submissions for artist portfolios. that way, artists aren't making new original art just for these contests, and instead can be treated like legitimate freelancers looking for a gig
these portfolio submissions should come with clear guidelines for what kind of work that'd be expected, and how much they can be expected to be paid. that would be totally fine, and maybe a great way for artists to find work??? i don't know this might have issues i'm spitballing
anyway my point is this type of submission system that ffbf uses where they expect tons of uncompensated art to be submitted by artists who are hoping and praying sweet jesus that their new design will get selected so they can get compensated is goddamn bullshit

addendum: somebody has provided me numbers on what artists are paid for their work if its selected
10% of sales for tshirts, 3-10% for accessories, and 3-5% of wholesales to shops
no upfront cash, period
that’s abysmal

artists are actively encouraged to make sure they pimp out their own wares on social media to increase their sales, and ffbf sells the shirts for wholesale to artists if they want to sell them at cons
which... they might not have rights to do! that’s case by case, of course

anyway, some additional information to consider. PLEASE DONT SUPPORT FFBF
(for comparison: redbubble offers you 15-20%, you get control over your own prices to a point, and you DON'T HAVE TO ENTER A GODDAMN CONTEST)
