BTS & ARMYS: a history 💜
This thread is not made to relive the sad times nor to hate on any group. This our history. A reminder of everything we lived together to understand why & how we got here

This is the story of 7 boys who never stopped fighting for their dreams even when the world was against them
"Where there is hope, there are trials"
November 2013

A rapper that goes by the name of BFree disrespected BTS, especially Namjoon & Yoongi. He called them girls for wearing makeup. He told them they were on the right path but then they strayed away. BFree told them they can't be considered real hip-hop artists.
2013 - 2014

BTS were almost always being cut from broadcasts. Their performances would get cut off & some wouldn't even be uploaded on YouTube.

Why?

Because they weren't popular.

People were telling them they can't make it because they come from a small company.
In 2014, Yoongi talked about battling depression in a radio interview. He said hes been battling it since his pre-debut days.

"In the past, my body was quite large. People may not believe it but I had a really big frame so I worked really hard at exercising"
The MC then asked him if he lost weight so which Yoongi responded with

"After I hurt my shoulder, I went to the hospital & they told me to not exercise. I worked hard to stay with out & tired"

This confession led to the lyrics in the song Tomorrow

🎶I wanted to become happy
and strong but why am i getting weaker?
Where am I going? I'm going here & there but I always come back here
Yea I'll probably flow somewhere, is there an end to this maze🎶
February 2014

They got accused of copying the school boy concept for 'Boy in Luv'. The accusation came shortly after another big group dropped their school boy concept MV.
November 2014

A hashtag trended by antis.

The hashtag was #/kickoutjhopeBTS. People were calling him ugly & not talented.

The issue got so big that Tony Jones (from AHL) tweeted.

Jin also saw what was happening & told ARMYS to cheer up & that they were practicing hard.
That same day, ARMYS trended #JHopeYourePerfect to bring him comfort ❤
May 2015

After 2 years, BTS finally won their first music show.

This is from 'Skit: Expectation' from HYYH pt1.
Despite their doubts, they WON 🎉 for the FIRST time in 2 YEARS.
It was supposed to be a happy day
However, antis accused them of sajaegi.

For anyone who doesn't know what sajaegi means it's when a company buys albums in very large quantities to boost the official numbers.

At the time, BigHit said

"BigHit entertainment doesn't have the resources to do such a thing"
In their beginnings, BTS & BigHit struggled a lot financially.

BTS were all living in one room.
They couldn't afford certain props or sets nor hire actors. So their managers would act & they would use their own cars.
Later in May, Taehyung got criticised for allegedly being rude to another group.

He was singing 'Loser' by BIGBANG during their acceptance speech.
It got bad.
Shortly after the show, Tae tweeted.

"These 3 songs are the ones i listen to every day before going to sleep because they're really good, sonit became a habit that the lyrics come out of my mouth upon receiving the trophy. I love you guys, you're really cool [to BIGBANG]"
July 2015

BTS had a concert in New York for their "The Red Bullet Tour".

The show got stopped because Namjoon received death threats. All activities got cancelled.
"During the concert, alleged threats towards a band member surfaced on social media showing people touting handguns threatening BTS leader Rap Monster (real name Kim Namjoon) & using the concret's official hashtag #/BTSinNY

Source: Billboard.

A fanmeeting that was planned after
the show also got cancelled.

Namjoon also received another death threat during their first show in Mexico (July 29th).
2016

Antis accused BTS of misogyny because of their song lyrics.

This brought them a lot of anxiety.

Namjoon said after the controversy
Antis accused them of plagiarism.

During Young Forever era, antis claimed that BTS copied another group's concept.

The accusations kept going for a while. It went from copying hair colors & clothes to poses in pictures.
The accusations also went to copying another group's concept for SK telecom photocards.

Antis were just beginning & they didn't seem to slow down.
During BTS' Epilogue concert, antis started a project & used the hashtag #/표절소년단 which translates to "Plagiarism Boys".
Many kpop fandoms teamed up to trend it & it was #1 in Korea.

ARMYS started then to trend another hashtag.

Sadly, everyone including the media only saw the first one. Including BTS.
This wasn't the end of it.

Antis next project was

"Break Wings Project".

The goal was to sabotage BTS comeback that was scheduled for October.

They wanted to trend #/Breakwings

The reason as to why they wanted to do this is because they said BTS was going to affect their
groups' chart position.

However, ARMYS found out about the project & trended another hashtag.
November 2016

Taehyung made a heartbreaking announcement.
Antis took this event & turned it into something so twisted. They accused him of using his grandmother passing away for attention.
...
They even started to send death threats to Tae.
This is when BigHit & BTS finally took action.

They released an official statement about taking legal actions when it comes to malicious rumors, false statements & personal attacks against the group.
"BTS members have been experiencing difficulties with rumors & malicious comments for a long time, so we have decided to firmly handle this. BigHit entertainment & all of the members of BTS have worked very hard to embrace the criticism & evaluations with open minds in order to
grow & improve as artists. However, we have decided that it has come to a point where we can no longer overlook the behavior of netizens who consistently & habitually distort the truth & make personal attacks regarding BTS' creative work, music activities & more with malicious
intent"

Later that same month...

BTS won their first Daesang for Album of the Year 🎉
Fans from another group were extremely upset.

They said that the award was given out of charity & that everything was miscalculated.

They contacted MELON customer service.

The employee told them that the company's data said that BTS' score was higher.
The audio of the conversion was revealed.
I will put the transcript of the conversation below
EXO-L: It’s regarding the Melon Music Awards.

Call Center Agent: Yes.

EXO-L: I’ve seen other phone conversations and it seems like you (Melon) have your internal data.

Call Center Agent: Yes, that’s the digital sales score. Internal data is the overall data collected from Nov.
19th, 2015 till Nov. 18th, 2016. And the charts you’ve seen, those are just one of the many sides of the real-time chart. The internal data referred to by Melon is the total data collected during the one-year period. This includes real-time, weekly, monthly, and the day-to-day
album sales, etc. It’s the total score.

EXO-L: But if the artist didn’t release any albums during that one-year period, it won’t be counted, right?

Call Center Agent: That’s right.

EXO-L: We have calculated our own score for this award, so what you’re saying is that the data
we see is absolutely different compared to the data considered by Melon?

Call Center Agent: No, we’re looking at the same data. But the chart you’ve seen and the real-time … the data you’ve seen is what you see immediately after the artist releases their album, right?
EXO-L: I don’t think that’s right.

Call Center Agent: I think it’s difficult for you to see the total data figure because that data is only available to LOEN. I’m not sure how you’ve calculated the score, but whatever you’ve calculated is the scores from the chart. But what we
use is not the chart, we look at the data of … you know the number of times listened by the general public and not how many times their fans buy or stream the artist’s songs. It’s the overall digital score.
EXO-L: Then you mean you won’t reveal that data?

Call Center Agent: It’s a fair internal data, so it’s not that we won’t reveal the data. We can’t reveal the data.

EXO-L: Is there a reason why you can’t reveal this data?

Call Center Agent: I think you are suspecting internal
fabrication, but as far as I can tell you, there is no corruption. You can understand that BTS won the award because their songs were streamed more compared to EXO’s during the one-year period.

EXO-L: You should convince us that this is true first. The people who voted for these
awards didn’t vote for free, did we? They said we could vote three times by purchasing streaming passes and you (Melon) made us pay for them, but if you refuse to reveal the (internal) data

Call Center Agent: It’s not that we refuse to reveal the data, please listen to me.
After EXO released their album, there were instances when their songs topped the charts immediately.

EXO-L: I’m not considering those immediate moments when they top the chart. I mean, it’s hard for the fans to understand this situation, so as a customer who voted and used your
service, you need to convince us to stop the fans from talking about this situation.

Call Center Agent: No. I tried to explain and convince you about this situation, but you’re the one that’s not understanding. As I’ve told you, during the one-year period BTS scored higher
but you want to see the data related to this, am I right?

EXO-L: Yes.

Call Center Agent: As for that, this data is the sum of all internal data, so it’s not that we refuse to reveal it, we just can’t reveal this because it’s our internal data.
EXO-L: Why can’t you reveal this?

Call Center Agent: It’s I-N-T-E-R-N-A-L D-A-TA. I.N.T.E.R.N.A.L.

EXO-L: What’s the difference? Why can’t you reveal this internal data? If this data has been organized, you can reveal it to us, right?

Call Center Agent: No, this isn’t about
being organized. It’s enormous. This data includes every artist, not only EXO. Data that was collected during the course of one year, isn’t that right?

EXO-L: Yes. Go on.

Call Center Agent: So it’s quite impossible for us to organize it individually. We award the artist
according to the total score.

EXO-L: Ok.

Call Center Agent: And BTS scored higher.

EXO-L: Alright.

Call Center Agent: Thank you. This was Melon Customer Care”
The situation got worse when BTS won Artist of the Year at the 2016 MAMA.
People were claiming they didn't deserve it. They would post "proofs" & it created a lot of heated arguments between fandoms. Controversy from the other group's speech added to the fuel.

The proverb essentially explains how newcomers will always overtake the old.
The speech could be considered innocent as multiple Ls were stating. It makes sense that an artist who has won an award would not want to be overtaken by new groups.
February 2017

BigHit updated their statement on the legal actions they were taking against people who were defaming BTS.
They mentioned that over the past 2 months they categorized ober 240k pieces of evidence.
Match 2017

During WINGS tour, death threats were made targeting Jimin. BH addressed the situation & maximized the security around all venues.
December 2017

Fans from another group got pissed because of the 2017 MAMA results.

They filed a petition to the Blue House.

They thought their group deserved Artist of the Year instead of BTS.

International fans caused the website to crash.
This was only a small fraction of everything that happened. The story is long & somewhat heartbreaking but very inspirational.

I didn't want to include personal or pre debut issues.

Sadly until now, BTS still continues to experience hardships. The difference is that they are
stronger but so are their ARMYS 💜
This thread was not made in order for us to feel sorry towards BTS. Nor to hold grudges against others.

But to be proud of BTS & ARMYS achievements.

Together, we overcame a lot of hardhsips. Remember, where there is hope, there are trials 💜
We are where we are today because we never gave up. We believed in them. They believed in us & thus we created our most beautiful moment in life 💜
