So how did vote leave cheat?
What was this extra money spent on and can it be justified?

Ah I didn't fall for any of that, I hear you say..

Let's see.

Thread:👇
Vote leave overspent by ÂŁ675 000. Aaron Banks contributed ÂŁ8 million in money he can't account for.

The purpose of this thread though is more focused on the ÂŁ675 000 as it's easier to show how this money was used.
It's important to understand this was all spent at the end of the campaign when they had the biggest gains in the polls.

This involved facebook ads and also they campaigned on facebook even when both campaigns were supposed to be taking a break because of the death of Jo Cox.
The biggest misconception in all this is people don't understand how specific this advertising was.

Cambridge Analytica was able to define the targeting to such a level they could track & target each potential swing voter.
So here is how they did it:

Firstly they needed facebooks permision to scrape YOUR data.

They started with a series of irrelevant apps or even competitions.

Like this one. You enter it & t&c's allow facebook to give them ALL your details.
Cambridge Analytica scraped the details of 50 million people.

They would have access to your facebook photo's and posts.

This then allows them to build up data profiles to know who might vote leave and who might remain.

If your opinion was set in stone you were left alone.
There is a way on facebook to check if anyone currently has your details.

I shall get to this later.

Personally when I checked, i discovered 22 companies had scraped my details over 10 years.
So now that they built their profiles the fun begins.

Let's see, let's just target old age pensioners who love UK traditions but don't reallt care or know about the EU.
They used this one:
Let's target people who are undecided about the EU but they may have liked a post or two about immigration. So let's lie that Turkey is joining even though Cameron had long ruled this out as a possibility.
And some more Turkey scaremongering and falsehoods:
And some more.. This time let's play on the fact that most people don't know what the shengen area is, so can't effect them anyway.
Everybody is joining the EU apparently. But remember this is only going to people who are not currently commited to voting leave, who they think this could influence
Do you love animals but not really fussed about the EU?

Then this for you.

Save our polar bears from.... not sure what.. but they thought this would work.
Bull fighting in Spain. This can be stopped by us leaving the EU.
.
The EU are stopping us improving our flood defences. You live in an area at risk to floods, not made up your mind about brexit- perfect Cambridge Analytica is putting this in your facebook feed.
Do you love Jeremy Corbyn? Let's put some of that love toward making you feel staying in the EU isn't all that important.
Remember this is a vote leave advert:
Remember this stuff is as much about getting someone to not vote at all as it is about getting people to vote leave.
This one is very ironic 2 and half years on:
But let's get back to bashing immigrants.
And back to riling up some undecided pensioners.
Most, if not all of these ads would not even have been seen by those of us who supported Remain.

So nobody refuted all of this stuff because we didn't know people were targeted with this in secret on an individual basis.
Remember this brave lady on QT:

“I was back and forth. The only thing that led me to vote leave that day was because of some sob story I read about a man with a boat, who can’t fish because the EU ruins his fishing rights,” she said. https://inews.co.uk/video/question-time-brexit-leave/
Was this the result of this camaign? Who knows, but it shows if you bombard people who haven't quite made up their mind, it's not hard to make them make the wrong decision.
So many lies.. all in secret, tailored for each person for the rest of us not to see.
And now to check your facebook to see which companies have your details.

Go to settings & privacy

Then business integrations and it shows which apps are using your data for advertising purposes.
You can just remove them.
Facebook has improved since the CA scandal.

Infact they have now split out business integration apps vs other apps that have your details.

They have even removed the really old apps. But always worth checking who has your details.
This only had to work on 2% of the electorate to get the swing they needed.

We have laws about political advertising on the radio or TV. Yet as you can see above Social media is more effective and has very few laws.

We need to change the law.
