Happy #NationalFarmersDay (TW)
• 27 factory farm workers face amputation or hospitalization on average a day
• Workers, mostly PoC, kill all males chicks & cut off the tip of the females’ beaks, affecting mental health
• 70% experience 1+ symptoms of respiratory illness
Workers drown in animal shit:
• Shit is stored below grated floors or sheds
• Workers who enter these “manure lagoons” to perform maintenance have been instantaneously asphyxiated by the release of hydrogen sulfide gas
• Once unconscious, workers drown in the liquid manure.
The story of Enrique Araiza:
• Enrique was 24 yrs old
• He was attempting to clear a blockage in a manure pit pump.
• He was overcome by the gases & collapsed facedown in the manure
• Jose Alatorre also entered the same pit & was affected by the gas
• Both tragically drowned
Fast facts:
• On average, 99% of the animal products you consume come from these factory farms
• Performing castrations, teeth clipping, tail cutting, ear notching & debeaking as well as killing animals who are weak and dying severely affects the mental health of these workers
Some statistics about factory farms:
• A job at a factory farm has one of the largest turnover rates in America.
• Their turn overrate is 95-100% annually
• 72% of workers are born outside of America
• 68% are born in Mexico
• 48% can’t legally work in the US
More fast facts:
• slaughterhouse workers can legally be fired at any time
• as a result, many don’t report injuries due to fear of being fired
• investigations uncovered that 15 year olds are working in these farms despite their 18 year old age requirement
Various animal rights activists released these photos from inside factory farms:
