1. Over the past few days i have been asked about Richard Gwesela.I didn't know much about his except that he was a dissident terrorising people in the midlands.I think i have more questions on this thug than answers #Asakhe
1. Most dissidents started operating around 1983 when they deserted from the army. Gwesela started operating at the tail-end of the dissident era, around 1987. First incident was reported on saturday 9 may 1987 at Somabhula Club
AfteR killing white farmers at Somabhula Club Gwesela and his gang then drove off in their vehicle. Most dissidents did not have vehicles .
One of the people killed at Somabhula club was Glyn Williams. A few days earlier "he illegal squatters" on Ruby Ranch, a Lonrho property managed by Glyn Williams, had sent threats and death notices to Glyn.
" it was surmised by some of the community that Gwesela had been contacted by these squatters to murder him as Glyn had been attempting to have them evicted".
The gang killed about 21 people before Gwesela was shot by security forces September 18, 1987
In 2013 the Herald reported that "“No one in the area saw his body (Gwasela) and even if you check with the family they would never show you where Richard was buried."
Herald went on to say " Some even believe that the family agreed that the authorities had killed Gwesela because it had gone through a lot during his reign of terror."
The general feeling is that the mother was afraid that she would be tortured. She identified the bullet- riddled body as her son’s for fear of continued victimisation by the people and security forces who combed the area daily.( Herald 13 september 2013)
The government put a reward of ZW$ 50 000 for Gwesela's capture dead or alive.
