To the self proclaimed "radical feminists" telling Native women criticizing @Yandy that we're "pretending that white women aren't oppressed, we can't care about two things at the same time, etc..." maybe you think that we don't know your derailing tactics... but we do.
"Why are you saying that white women haven't been oppressed?" Nobody said that. On the contrary, white women bring all kinds of attention to the oppression of other white women. Those are the stories that get national, global headlines.
Case in point: white women were outrageously offended by the sexy Handmaid's Tale costume, voiced that outrage, and saw immediate results. Meanwhile, Native people have been actively against Native costumes for DECADES and those costumes have yet to be pulled.
"Why can't we care about two things at the same time?" I mean... why can't you? You got that costume pulled. What's stopping you from empathizing with Native women (and other ethnic/cultural groups) and getting those racist costumes pulled as well?
I mean, to me, it looks like it isn't in your interest to get those costumes pulled, or to empathize with natives, but I digress.
And let's be real: a Handmaid's Tale sexy costume at best is LAUGHABLE. It's every bit as ridiculous as a sexy V for Vendetta costume. It might be in bad taste but it honestly hurts NOBODY. At the very least all it garners is an eyeroll.
Meanwhile, hypersexualization and degradation of Native women absolutely comes with violence. And Natives being told by @Yandy that WE'RE the ones "victim blaming Native women who get raped because of these costumes," is outrageous.
telling us they'll THINK about pulling the costume if our outrage is as big as Black Lives Matters is also outrageous and needlessly pits two oppressed groups and their movements against each other.
And yet, @Yandy pandered to the concerns and outrage of white women. Not us. And when we point out this double standard, we're met with derailment, gaslighting, manipulation, being told that WE'RE the ones being "divisive" and "making it a race issue," when really...
...if you cared about a womens issue, you'd empathize with ALL women, INCLUDING indigenous women, who are not listened to and are overlooked and treated TERRIBLY while you were being catered to.
I'm annoyed that I had to make a Twitter thread about this but considering the number of thoughtless, racist comments I've had to read on Does THe NDN Live, enough is enough.
The amount of disrespect Native women have faced by self proclaimed white feminists over this matter is overwhelming and literally all of you should be ashamed for how you treat us. I'm not surprised, but damn am I tired and sick of it.
