Today in 1965, the Communist Party of Indonesia was framed for the assassination of 6 Indonesian generals. This became a pretext for a nationwide genocide against communists in Indonesia
Although the official death toll was never released, it’s estimated that between 500,000-3,000,000 people were massacred in cold blood, including not only those accused as being communists, but atheists, and ethnic Chinese Indonesians
The US facilitated the massacres through providing intel and kill list. They cheered while innocent people being killed and then installed a corrupt comprador, Soeharto, whose regime was rife with repression of ethnic minorities and workers rights
The Communist Party of Indonesia and Marxist ideology is still banned in Indonesia, and the display of Communist symbols such as the hammer and sickle are prohibited. Leftist movements in Indonesia have still yet to recover
Fear of (being accused of) communism pretty much shaped most lives in Indonesia since 1965 https://twitter.com/asianbabyghoul/status/999294572596363264?s=21
The Act of Killing (2012) is one of the more well known documentaries about the massacre. Most crews working on the film are anonymous for their safety and fear of retaliation. This is from their credit scene.
