the basics: Jungkook’s range, vocal color, and key qualities
So in order to start our vocal analysis, I’d like to begin by describing the general qualities and color of Jungkook’s voice, many of which will be expanded upon in future threads.
To categorize him as a singer, it’s pretty well known that Jungkook is a Tenor. That means that he has the highest type of male voice. I would add on to this that Jungkook is also a Lyric Tenor - a vocal type characterized by soft, warm, and bright tones.
If you remember, a few days ago I asked you all to describe his vocal color for me, and many of you landed on things that again reinforce him being a Lyric Tenor - sweetness, smoothness, fluidity. Many also said words like honey, dreamy, and clear.
Now, this isn’t to say that Jungkook doesn’t have some soul or smoke or huskiness to his voice at times. Since he’s so versatile and has a good sense of where to place sounds (more on this later), he’s able to change his voice to suit the vibe needed.
For example, check out his intro to “I’m a Flyinf Butterfly” at the 2016 KBS Song Festival. You can clearly hear some husk and raspiness here, which compliments the vibe of the song beautifully!
For other examples of huskiness and sharpness, you can check out his signature lines in Dope, Not Today, and IDOL. We’ll be talking more about his versatility with those clips in another thread! 🐰
For range, it’s said that his voice spans three octaves - from a G2 to a Bb5. His line in Dope (“I gotta make it”) is an example of him hitting an F5, using his head voice. Jungkook’s range overall shows off his ability to use chest, head, mixed and falsetto.
All of which he uses brilliantly depending on what sound he wants - he sometimes sings with more breath for a more romantic, foggy quality (If You), or focuses more in his head voice for a sharper sound (Ma City adlibs).
Here’s a compilation of his high notes that I watch almost every day for health reasons that displays his use of those parts of the voice: https://twitter.com/jeonss97/status/1038419748923437057?s=21
Another key characteristic of his voice is stability. It’s amazing that he can sing and dance the way he does, especially with the notes he’s hitting. He very rarely displays major pitch issues, despite the toughness of the choreography.
For me, my favorite example of his stability is in his performance of “Begin.”
And something that often comes up in regard to Jungkook’s vocals is his ability to invoke emotion - many of his covers, for example, demonstrate his artistry in that he carries each note with emotional weight. For this - I point to the end of his cover of “Only Then.”
One last thing I’d like to mention is that in addition to being able to use many parts of his voice, Jungkook also stays relaxed. A lot of singers tense up, especially when they’re accessing higher ranges. But if you watch him live, he makes it look so easy!
That’s all for this introductory thread. I just wanted to set up a base of defining his vocal characteristics, that way we can expand on things in the future! 🐰💕
