Preparation process begins with a conversation with your loved ones.

-What needs to be done to protect home/property?
Make simple, manageable tasks to form a common game plan.

Having the proper insurance is the best line of defense in ensuring that you come back stronger after a storm and are able to minimize debt accrued during the preparation and recovery process.
Call your local emergency management office and speak with an agent. They are there to serve you and want to help you be as prepared as possible for disasters.

Take inventory of the items in your home! Determine what is important to you and what has value. These items should be safeguarded, documented through insurance, and stored properly, perhaps off-site.
Make copies or take pictures of important documents & store them in the cloud, or at an off-site, secure location.

A storm has impacted your home. Now what?
First, wait until the authorities have given the all clear to return home. Don't believe rumors! Find a trusted source & stay safe in your evacuation zone until it is safe to return home.

When you arrive at your home, inspect the outside first.
Look for:
-Erosion around the foundation that may cause it to be unstable
-Cracks in the structure
-Windows/doors out of alignment
-Damage to roof or any loose debris overhead

Once you've determined the home is safe to enter, make sure you take note of these two very important aspects:
-Is there a gas leak?
-Is the electricity on or off?
Both of these things can pose a significant hazard.

-nails or other sharp objects
-slippery surfaces
-wood that could cause splinters
