I had the fantastic opportunity to interview @mattlyttle of @fema a few weeks ago on ways to prepare for a hurricane in a way that will make the recovery process easier. Going to share that info in this thread, but you can also listen to the podcast here: https://www.accuweather.com/podcast
Preparation process begins with a conversation with your loved ones.

-What are the risks in your area?
-Where would you go if evacuated?
-What would you take with you?
-What needs to be done to protect home/property?

Make simple, manageable tasks to form a common game plan.
Make sure you include your pets in your game plan and preparations!

Visit https://www.ready.gov/animals  to learn how to include pets of all sizes in your plans.
Have an emergency "go bag" that you can easily grab and take with you, should an evacuation be sudden. This AccuWeather Ready document has more information what that should contain: https://accuweather.brightspotcdn.com/a3/14/d7841f2145159fd2d068c5ac19f0/staying-prepared-during-hurricane-season.pdf
Next step:

Call your insurance agent. Understand what hazards you face and if you are insured for those. Insurers want to help their policy holders mitigate risk!

Also keep in mind that most homeowners insurance policies do NOT include flood insurance.
Having the proper insurance is the best line of defense in ensuring that you come back stronger after a storm and are able to minimize debt accrued during the preparation and recovery process.
Call your local emergency management office and speak with an agent. They are there to serve you and want to help you be as prepared as possible for disasters.

Take inventory of the items in your home! Determine what is important to you and what has value. These items should be safeguarded, documented through insurance, and stored properly, perhaps off-site.
Make copies or take pictures of important documents & store them in the cloud, or at an off-site, secure location.

-Birth certificates
-Passport
-Driver's license
-Social Security card
-Medical papers
-Financial docs
-Insurance policies
-Bank statements

-Legal docs
-Marriage or divorce certificates
-Home ownership deeds
-Car deeds
-Military papers

It will benefit you immensely to have all of that on hand when you go to start the recovery process.
. @fema has an Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) that covers all of this in significant detail. It's absolutely worth reviewing and utilizing.

A storm has impacted your home. Now what?

First, wait until the authorities have given the all clear to return home. Don't believe rumors! Find a trusted source & stay safe in your evacuation zone until it is safe to return home.
When you arrive at your home, inspect the outside first.

Look for:

-Erosion around the foundation that may cause it to be unstable
-Cracks in the structure
-Windows/doors out of alignment
-Damage to roof or any loose debris overhead
Once you've determined the home is safe to enter, make sure you take note of these two very important aspects:

-Is there a gas leak?
-Is the electricity on or off?

Both of these things can pose a significant hazard.
As you walk around the outside & inside of home, make sure you watch for:

-broken glass
-nails or other sharp objects
-slippery surfaces
-wood that could cause splinters
-surfaces that may be unstable or have structural damage, like porches/decks
4 main takeaways to conclude:

1. Make a plan. Good communication can alleviate a lot of concerns.
2. Get involved in your community & call local EM agent
3. Start saving for an emergency
3. Call insurance provide & mitigate your risk financially
You can't hope your way out of being prepared for a hurricane. Get involved, get informed, and you'll be as prepared as you can be to make the recovery process easier.
