When you know you’re getting up at 5am so your brain decides that sleep is for the weak and you don’t get to have any 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
I’ve already worked through my theory how the Marschallin is a feminist AF opera character and am now onto Floria Tosca being fierce AF in life and death, doing both on her own terms.
Homegirl was super religious but also had a passionate painter as her lover. Like, her and the Virgin Mary were close so one virgin was enough for the group and Floria was not it.
(In the play the opera is based on, Tosca spent time during her youth in a convent. It’s always the religious girls that hook up with the bad boys).
She’s an OPERA SINGER ffs. Of course she’s going to be interesting and passionate and also have great taste in frocks.
Also, she’s like “Mario, I love you, but if you paint some other woman I will fucking end you.” Iconic. TOSCA KNOWS HER WORTH, LADIES.
But when she finds out her beloved Mario (the painter, not the video game character) is in trouble, she’s like I GOT YOU and goes to gross Scarpia to get her man free.
When he is like “You’re hot and I’m a disgusting excuse for a man, so bang me and I’ll let him go” (my Italian is not good, I am paraphrasing), homegirl is like “God will forgive me, for I have lived for all that’s good aka art and love” and stabs him. STABS HIM. “E MORTOOOOOO”
She then lays out some candles (did Maria Callas start this? Idk. I’m not an expert) and is like good riddance and may God have mercy on your terrible soul.
THEN! Our Soprano Bae Tosca gets to the prison to “say goodbye” to Mario and is like don’t worry boo, I got you, it’ll be a fake execution BUT ALAS, Scarpia lied and Mario dies for real. Tosca’s cries of “Mario, MARIOOOO” will break your heart.
Then some dudes are like SCARPIA IS DEAD!!!! And start for Tosca and she is like “Let’s take this to God for Him to judge, asshole” (actual Italian, “O Scarpia, a vanti a Dio”) and JUMPS TO HER DEATH because she isn’t gonna let men dictate her life anymore.
Which is VERY interesting since, as a catholic, that’s the unforgivable sin. Does she think God will forgive, as mentioned in Vissi d’arte??? Or does she find eternity in hell worth seeing God’s judgment of Scarpia and escaping life on earth without Mario??
I AM NEVER GONNA SLEEP I AM TOO RILED UP ABOUT TOSCA.
Anyway. Tosca is my favourite Opéra and I have a lot of thoughts on it. I am so sorry.
Last thought: The opening chords of Tosca are BANGIN and they are my ringtone because, to quote my voice teacher, “Puccini is bae.”
I stand by all of this
