Thread: Was fed up of not knowing who played which nun in Sister Act (and that there’s no reference on the internet). The background choir of nuns absolutely made the film. So decided to investigate and document them all through their input to My God (hopefully there's no errors)
Obvs Whoopi, Kathy and Wendy
‘Hail girls. Hail Mary what’s up? Well Judaism’s become a real drag, everybody hates me. Ah-ah not that guy over there. Who him? They all say he’s different, they say he’s really weird. We don’t care what people say to us, he’s always there. Really?’
Rose Parenti (1911 – 1996) – Sister Alma – hopefully checking her battery in heaven
‘Nothing you could say could tear me away from my God (my God), Nothing you could do 'cause I'm stuck like glue to my God (my God)’
Susan Browning (1941 – 2006)
‘My God’
‘I'm sticking to my God like a stamp to a letter, like birds of a feather, we stick together, I'm telling you from the start, I can't be torn apart from my God’
Carmen Zapata (1927 – 2014) Sister Mary Emmanuelle - or was it Sister Mary Manuelle? (the only background Choir nun to be given a name in the film)
‘Nothing you could do could make me untrue to my God (my God)’
Ruth Kobart (1924 – 2002)
‘Nothing you could buy could make me tell a lie to my God (my God my God)’
Prudence Wright-Holmes @prudencewholmes
'I gave my God, my word of honour, to be faithful'
Georgia Creighton (we think, there’s nothing of her on the internet and this was a process of elimination – we loved her premature ‘HAIL!’ and ‘HEAVEN ON EARTH!’ when the choir was out of tune)
‘And I'm gonna’
Edith Diaz (1949 – 2009)
‘You best be believing’
‘I won't be deceiving my God. As a matter of opinion, I think he's tops, my opinion is he's the cream of the crop’
Pat Crawford-Brown
‘As a matter of taste’
Susan Johnson (1927 - 2003)
‘To be exact’
Beth Fowler
‘He's my ideal’
Mary Wickes (1910 – 1995) Sister Mary Lazarus
‘As a matter of fact’
‘No muscle bound man could take my hand from my God (my God), no handsome face could ever take the place, of my God (my God my God). He may not be a movie star, but when it comes to being happy’
Ellen Albertini Dow (1913 – 2015)
‘We are’
‘There's not a man today, who could take me away from my God (Cool it down now, ladies) There's not a man today who could take me away from my God (Give them some of that deep shoulder action) There's not a man today who could take me away from my God.’
Just to add, at the top right (with no solo lines), we think, is Darlene Koldenhoven @DarleneKolden
And top middle (again with no solo lines) we think is Sheri Izzard @sheriizzard
And of course Maggie Smith as Mother Superior
And just for completeness, Andrea Robinson, who wasn’t in the film but was the voice double for Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena @Wendy_Makkena ). Andrea appeared with the cast on the 25th Anniversary Reunion show on The View.
And there we are. Thanks for geeking out with us! Now can someone document this somewhere more accessible please? We are still trying to ask Hollywood Records (Disney) about releasing the original music from the films digitally. No replies to our emails as yet but we keep trying!
And on a tourist trip, here is the church from the film!
