Really infuriated by mediocre white ppl who think they’re above racism because they live in a blue state so they say shit like “I’m not racist; I just don’t like black people” and “I like Marvel movies but Black Panther doesn’t seem like my thing,” both of which I’ve heard in NJ
The former is pretty obvious, and the latter appears to be code for “movies without white protagonists make me uncomfortable” and I just do. not. have. the. time.
Implicit racism is dangerously pervasive; coded into our thoughts and left unchecked, it spreads to our actions — like hating NFL players protesting or calling the police on black people and other minorities for no reason, but still insisting you’re not racist
We continue to marginalize and otherize non-white people —intentionally or not — all the while waiting for racism to magically evaporate/hoping it will, as if we don’t have a responsibility to reflect on how we as white people in the United States perpetuate it
Saying something like “Black Panther isn’t my thing” may seem innocuous until the day you see a black person doing something suspicious like breathing and call the police because they must be dangerous — and then it’s apparent that, in fact, there’s nothing innocuous about racism
The guy who said that is a fan of Iron Man, Cap, Spider-Man, GotG. Isolating BP like that expresses a view that non-white characters are something alien, only relatable to non-white people — a view that creates unnecessary barriers and refuses to try to understand other people
The United States is not more divided by racial tensions than it ever has been (see: segregation) but now would be a good time for a heck of a lot more introspection than we’re seeing right now
If you’re white and something about the prospect of Black Panther or Crazy Rich Asians or a black James Bond makes you uncomfortable but you can’t quite put your finger on it, it’s probably time to explore that a little further. Now is a good time to engage with that discomfort
Considering our long history of subjugation and suppression of other races and minority groups, putting ourselves in situations where white is not the default and our voices are not raised over the voices of other groups is literally the least we can do
