Dear @jason_mraz,
Two-spirit is not a catch all term for bisexuality and you really need to understand this and address how the miseducation that you received and repeated for a mainstream media publication hurts Indigenous communities, especially our two-spirit people.
If you are NOT Native....you are NOT Two-Spirit. If you are NOT Native....you do NOT get to claim Two-Spirit identity. You are NOT entitled to Two-Spirit identity. The term Two-Spirit is not an umbrella term for LGBTQ identities.
Two-Spirit is a term used to identity, reclaim and revitalize very specific identities histories, legacies and power that go far beyond just sexuality and gender identity for Indigenous peoples.
Non-Natives do not get to further disrupt the reclamation and empowerment of Two-Spirit identities by colonizing the term and conflating it with THEIR sexual and gender identities because they think it's cute, trendy or entitled to it because "they like the way it sounds".
Our Two-Spirit ancestors were targeted, beaten, raped, murdered because colonizers thought they were evil, sinful.....they were targeted because of the power they held within many of our communities as leaders, healers, warriors...
And today, after centuries of colonization and assimilation, they not only continue to be targeted by Non-Native society, but they also have to fight to have their identities, power and histories recognized and respected by Tribal nations indoctrinated by Christianity
So, no @jason_mraz...You are NOT Two-Spirit and you will never be Two-Spirit. You do not get to contribute to the marginalization, erasure and violence that plagues Two-Spirit people by using the term to describe your sexuality. Ignorance does not get you a pass here.
You knew it originated with Indigenous peoples but CHOSE not to do further research and instead claimed it because you liked the way it sound.
