What are body lines? Why are they talked about so frequently in reference to Jimin and his dancing? Why are they so important?

A line is a classical ballet term now used in many dance styles to describe the outline or shape of a dancer’s body as they perform steps, sequences and poses. You might think of it as their silhouette. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Everyone has body lines. They extend from the tips of your fingers to the tips of your toes and include everything in between. The idea in dance is to seamlessly connect these lines together in a fluid picture, with no jutting limbs or awkward angles. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
A dancer must pay attention to the connection of every part of their body, such as how the forearm connects to the wrist, the wrist to the hand, the hand to the fingers. The lines don’t have to be straight, but they must be artistic and adding to an overall picture. #JIMIN
The way a dancer’s leg extends from the hip down to the foot creates a line. In the pictures here, you can see the turnout out of Jimin’s right leg and the way the body line curves beautifully from his head to his back and throughout his leg in attitude. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
It’s not just the arms and legs that affect a dancer’s body line. Tilting the head, elongating the neck and keeping the shoulders down can open the chest to the audience and create a beautiful line. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
And adding to all this, there must be an energy and extension to the dancer’s movements and poses - they must never look static or lifeless. The dancer should always be breathing, reaching and using the space around them. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
If a dancer has nice lines while dancing, someone should be able to take a picture at any moment and capture a stunning image from head to toe, as if the dancer posed for it on purpose. Sounds an awful lot like Jimin, doesn’t it? #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Dancers have so much to think about in a routine, from basic steps to keeping their balance to the sequence of the choreography, that paying attention to their lines often becomes a last consideration. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Because of this, beautiful body lines that can be seen even in the transition between movements are often the mark of an advanced dancer and they are the quality that separates good dancers from the great ones. As you might guess, Jimin is a great dancer. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
